words of choice.jpgApparently there is a long-running play called Words of Choice that has pro-aborts bonding in group hugs.
Yesterday’s Words of Choice blog gave us a peek into their world when excitedly recounting a performance before world renowned abortionist George Tiller in way off-Broadway Wichita:

On October 9, the cast of Words of Choice… presented the premiere performance of Words of Choice II in the First Unitarian Universalist Church in Wichita….
Wichita, of course, has some of the serious highs and lows of the fight for reproductive freedom.
The highs include Dr. George Tiller, one of the nation’s most accomplished and dedicated ob-gyns and abortion providers. He performs difficult surgeries that many women are unable to access elsewhere. Women travel from throughout the country to see Dr. Tiller and his incredible and caring staff. Other highs are the members of NOW that carry forward the ideals of reproductive freedom, and the Maggot Punks, a group of mostly-young people who unmask and bark back at the virulent elements of the Religious Right….

On the low side – Operation Save Rescue, Troy Newman, and others who have descended upon Wichita….

Also in attendance was Dr. Tiller, who gave one of the actors a pin that he wears, “Attitude is Everything.” Clinic workers said that everyone at the clinic wears the pin – as part of their “uniform.” And Dr. Tiller explained his thinking about how the mere presence of the button increases positive thinking, and how positive thinking inspires more positive thinking. What a wonderful message to hear….

Other audience members spoke up, as well. One woman decried the amount of time that prochoice people have to spend fighting back against the anti-abortion protesters. For ten years, she said, she hears people saying that there will be positive prochoice legislation any day – as soon as the anti-abortion legislation is defeated. The latter, of course, is never-ending, shelving the pro-choice agenda way too often….
Another woman said: “People need to know that it’s okay to think this way.” Coming from New York, the actors were struck by the silence and stigma that has dragged down choice issues from being part of ordinary conversation….

As a group, however, the cast was intrigued by stories of clinic workers and by Dr. Tiller. So… we decided to drive over to the clinic in the morning.
A small 2-3 contingency of anti-abortion protesters were there. They are supposedly there all around the clock now in “40 days of protests.” On the side lawn lining the clinic, they had set out a row of about 20 white crosses. They had a table and handed out literature, held up some signs. Right next door was a very deceptive crisis pregnancy center – called “Choices.” It’s certainly handy for the protesters, who seem to use it as a living room and bathroom stop. One actor, Crista, went in, and they handed her anti-abortion literature.

But perhaps the most shocking site was seeing the truck that they drive around with images of bloody fetuses. It had a big banner across it that said “Welcome to ObamaNation.” The imagery shows exactly how the anti-abortion forces are trying to push election issues.
And, once again, we left with admiration for Dr. Tiller and his staff, keeping going, despite the environment. They are collectively and individually heroes of the reproductive justice movement.

If “images of bloody fetuses” was so “shocking,” the troupe obviously did not get the full Tiller tour.
There were a couple interesting acknowledgments in this piece…

  • Tiller rightfully has a hard time keeping a positive mental outlook, as does his staff. (That paragraph about the “Attitude is Everything” pins was frankly stupid.)
  • Pro-aborts rightfully sense a “stigma” against their position no matter what bold face they put on.
