Whitney Houston’s “Miracle”: pro-life or not?

She also [performs] her latest hit Miracle, which she says is not delivering an anti-abortion or a pro-life message.
“I didn’t sing it with that in mind,” she explains. “I think about the air we breathe, the earth we live on. I think about our children. I think about a lot of things, things God put here for us to have, things that we need and we take for granted. I think all of these things are miracles and I think we should try to take better care of them,” she notes.
~ now-deceased singer Whitney Houston in an interview featured in the June 24, 1991 issue of Jet Magazine.
According to Wikipedia:
The song is about a girl who had an abortion but later feels she made a mistake. In an interview at that time, Houston acknowledged the song was indeed about abortion and praised Babyface for digging so deep with the song’s lyrical content. Not wanting to alienate any fans, however, the video for the song doesn’t stick with the subject, instead showing Houston singing and various photographs injected periodically.
Below are partial lyrics for the song:
Chorus:
Nothing should matter
Not when love grows inside you
The choice is yours
There’s a miracle in store…
Nothing should matter
Not when love grows inside you
A voice of love is crying out
Don’t throw love away
There’s a miracle in store…
How could I let go of a miracle?
Nothing could ever take its place
Thought I was looking, out for myself
Now it seems the pain
Is all that I have gained

it sure does sound pro life. i always believed carrie underwoods video ” Jesus Take The Wheel ” was a pro life video…..i guess i may have been wrong but it sure leans to the pro life side to me. EITHER WAY BOTH WOMEN SING ABOUT THE LORD AND LOVE THE LORD AND ITS REFRESHING TO SEE BECAUSE MORE AND MORE PEOPLE ARE TALKING ABOUT “THE SKY GHOST” AND DESPITE IT ALL THEY LOVE THE LORD. JUST MY 2 CENTS.
its indeed still so sad that a woman who had it all is gone! its hard to process that shes gone;(
sorry about the capital letters above. my little keyboard stuck. one last point…… a lot of singers dont want to offend some fans so they wont really speak out about their position on abortion. i was talking to an african american girl in her 20s when we were down town doing our annual pro life display. we had graphic photos and she stopped and was disgused. she told us ” i did a paper in college about abortion and when i began reading it out loud and a few of the girls got up and walked out.” she was totally pro life and couldnt believe the pics of aborted babies. she even said “omg thats what it looks like”? she began coming out to the sidewalk with us. we need to stop allowing pro aborts to bully us. they need to see that an abortion kills a baby. i know they get upset but i really dont care. weve got to show them their “choice”~ get over it!

From what i read quickly, outside of Wikipedia, Babyface (the writer) was pro-life.
WOW!! That gave me chills! What a talent!! What a beautiful song! What a shame that she’s gone…
Wow. Beautiful message.
Nothing should matter
Not when loves grows inside you
The choice is yours
There’s a miracle in store
Nothing should matter
Not when love grows inside you
A voice of love is crying out
Don’t throw love away
There’s a miracle in store
Love.
How sad that she’s gone. But as usual people in the entertainment business are all warm and fuzzy about her now. Where were they when she needed friends? It’s not easy being someone’s friend when it’s an ordinary weekday and no one is pointing a camera at you.
I pray for her daughter and family at this time. I hope they find comfort and peace.
Are you sure she wasn’t singing about a favorite crack pipe that she lost?
Can you stoop lower, Joan? I don’t think your acidic comments have hit rock bottom yet.
wow she isnt even in the grave yet joan. you are pure evil! culture of death……sick woman.
actually ninek….i think that might be the worst. a typical bitter pro abort mocking a dead woman.
Yep, but WE’RE anti-woman, dontcha know?
I came across Whitney’s quote on a Whitney fan club message board.
Apparently there had been some questions as to whether Whitney was singing a pro-life song, and as you can see, she didn’t interpret it that way.
Then later in the thread, the commenters debated whether she knew it was pro-life and just didn’t want to go there, or whether it was even a pro-life song to begin with.
She apparently was interviewed about this on BET on Donny Simpson’s show, but I could only find part one of the interview on youtube; they hadn’t gotten to the song question yet. I had no luck finding part two.
<from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miracle_(Whitney_Houston_song) >
“Miracle” is the third single from Whitney Houston’s multi-platinum third album, I’m Your Baby Tonight. It was written and produced by L.A. Reid and Babyface. The song is about a girl who had an abortion but later feels she made a mistake. In an interview at that time, Houston acknowledged the song was indeed about abortion and praised Babyface for digging so deep with the song’s lyrical content. Not wanting to alienate any fans, however, the video for the song doesn’t stick with the subject, instead showing Houston singing and various photographs injected periodically.”
The lyrics are very pro-life in nature, and I believed it to be the case the 1st time I heard the song back in 1991. Great song from a blessed singer…she will be missed.
I don’t understand how she could NOT know this was a pro-life song!
First time I have heard this song. I am in tears. It sounds pro-life to me. I see cross earrings. Praying that she’s in heaven. I think that her death is suspicious. She was just my age. She will be greatly missed.
It takes courage to face adults and call/tell them what abortion is,the murder of a human baby in development!
The thing is…..we each will give an account on what we did for the babies…… The judgement will be harsh and no peers will be on that jury!
Just saying……
As someone who had a (very regretted) abortion, this song sends chills down my spine today! Every word resonates with my regret and even the part about ”I wonder if I can be your miracle and spare you pain” is about that post abortive woman trying to reach another one to keep her baby and thereby sparing her that furture pain. I used to love this song as a teenager when it first came out but I didn’t connect it with anything pro life then. If it had been outwardly pro life it might have influenced me more positively and meaningfully in my life.
While I feel that the message in ‘Miracle’ is mostly and commendably pro-life, there is one subtle pro-choice message, and that is evidenced in the line: “The choice is yours”.
I remember that Whitney was criticized for not taking part in various pro-abort events, so I think that she might have been at least somewhat prolife.
It is sad she’s gone and as for Joan’s response — I’m speechless.
This is without a doubt a pro-life song. One of the best I’ve ever heard. Whitney was blessed with one of the most extraordinary voices in the world. As far as I know, she admitted that ‘Miracle’ had a pro-life message, but they did not want to cause a huge controversy at the time with the video. Ironically, there is a picture in the video of a man in jail with a tatoo of Our Lady of Guadalupe on his chest. Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of the pro-life movement. The reason for this is that the Virgin Mary appeared to St. Juan Diego in Mexico as a pregnant woman. Whether that part was intentional or not, it seems that the hand of God played a huge part in the production of this song and video. RIP Whitney Houston. The world will miss you. And thankyou for such a beautiful life-affirming song.
Fortunate to have been adopted, photographed by Mary Ellen Mark and subsequently that picture was used in the book: A Day in The Life of America and in Whitney Houston’s Miracle video, I found all of the coincidences a blessing. It made me appreciate my biological mother’s choice of giving me up for a better life. It made me wonder about the emotional aspect of her decision. It affirmed that my biological mother’s choice to give me up was indeed a miracle for my adoptive parents who gave me a fantastic life. Always loved Whitney’s music and was so thrilled to be a part, although small, of the video’s message.
