First, NDResponse.com posted a powerful, well-done video May 2 NDResponse is the Notre Dame pro-life student group organized to protest its university’s invitation of radically pro-abort President Barack Obama to speak at its commencement and receive an honorary degree May 17…
Next, NDResponse announced this morning that its student coalition “finally” received word Saturday night it had been given the approvals necessary for on-campus plans to counter President Abortion’s presence.
Following is the rough schedule from NDResponse. Don’t forget ND is on Eastern Standard Time…
Saturday evening, May 16, at a time after the Baccalaureate Mass (at which it has been reported Bishop D’Arcy does plan to either celebrate or preside) Bishop D’Arcy will be involved in prayers or a prayer service with the protesting graduates and their families at the Grotto There will be Eucharistic Adoration over night Saturday night in a chapel. Bishop D’Arcy intends to spend some time during the evening with the adorers. Adoration will continue until 11:00a EST Sunday morning. At 11:15 a EST Sunday, May 17th, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered on the South Quad near the Rockne Memorial end (west end) of that quadrangle. It is the hope of ND Response that as many as possible of the 10 C.S.C. priests who publicly objected to the Obama invitation will be among the principle concelebrants of the Mass. Making it possible for the objecting C.S.C’s. to participate in the Mass and other facets of the weekend is one area where ND Response would appreciate the assistance of any concerned individuals, as most of these priests are not currently stationed at ND and would have to be flown in. Anyone who knows any potential donors who might be willing to assist in this effort is encouraged to contact John Daly* through the e-mail address email@example.com. A number of people thought a Mass directly opposite the graduation ceremony might be appropriate. The ND Response leadership discussed this possibility directly with Bishop D’Arcy, and they came to the conclusion together that while in many respects this could be appropriate there would be a substantial number of people who could well lose the proper focus of the Holy Sacrifice and treat it as a form of protest in and of itself. The current scheduling is as late as possible to allow people coming in from the Central Standard Time Time zone (Chicago) to deal with losing 1 hour in the morning and still have the opportunity to fulfill the Sunday obligation prior to the activities immediately proximate to the commencement. At 12:30p EST, also on the South Quad, there will be a rally and speaking program that will extend until near the time of the commencement itself at 2:00 p.m. During the commencement there will be a prayerful program at the Grotto which will involve Fr. Frank Pavone of Priests for Life.
Bishop D’Arcy is working to quickly firm up several possibilities that have been floated previously whereby nearby parishes will be able to help house or at least provide gym floor space for those planning to stay over night Saturday night.
Details will also be forthcoming about parking arrangements and campus access along the west side of the ND campus. The Holy Cross orders and the diocese combine to own most or all of the property on both sides of 31 around both Doer and St. Mary’s Roads which provide very direct access to the South Quad (Doer is slightly better) and the Grotto (St. Mary’s is better).
For those who have not heard as much previously ND Response established a subcommittee composed strictly of 2009 graduates to determine the organized student response by those opposing the invitation & honorary degree within the class. That subcommittee developed its plans in a large degree of secrecy, initially even from the commissioners of ND Response who were not members of the class. It certainly appears obvious from these announced plans that a large or perhaps the sole focus of that response is a boycott. There also may be other small groups or individuals amongst the 2009 graduates and their guests who have their own ideas about raising the pro-life issue to Mr. Obama inside the Joyce Center.
There will also definitely be additional independent organizations who have obtained their own permits and will be conducting their own protests totally independent of the ND Response program around portions of the periphery of the ND campus on May 17th.
*FYI, John Daley is a ND grad student and grandson of pro-life legends Dr. and Mrs. Eugene Diamond.
