Letterman vs. Palin and decency
This past weekend Sarah Palin and 14-year-old daughter Willow attended a NY Yankees game as guests of Rudy Giuliani.
On Monday David Letterman first was unfunny with a “Top 10 highlights of Sarah Palin’s trip to NY,” calling her, as Reclusive Leftist synopsized, “a crack whore with a ‘slutty flight attendant look'”:
Letterman followed up with this joke:
… and if those weren’t enough, this one on Tuesday:
… to which Palin responded with this statement today:
Concerning Letterman’s comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he’d ever dare make such comments about anyone else’s daughter): “Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands – that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.”
Letterman also issued a statement today, clarifying – sans apology – that he was not joking about Willow but about 18-year-old sister and teen mother Bristol. From EW.com:
“We were, as we often do, making jokes about people in the news and we made some jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter [Bristol]… and now they’re upset with me…” Letterman says on tonight’s show. “These are not jokes made about her 14-year-old daughter. I would never, never make jokes about raping or having sex of any description with a 14-year-old girl…. Am I guilty of poor taste? Yes. Did I suggest that it was okay for her 14-year-old daughter to be having promiscuous sex? No.” Saying he hopes he’s “cleared part of this up,” Letterman extended an invitation to Palin to come on the show as a guest.
Now, while even Perez Hilton thinks Letterman was joking about Willow, I think Letterman was indeed speaking about Bristol.
That said, Bristol was only 17 when becoming pregnant and is still a teen – an admirable teen who chose not to abort.
Letterman’s joke was out-of-bounds, but for a bigger reason. Again, from Reclusive Leftist (pardon the color):
Folks, I spent a good portion of last year writing about this sh**. Remember the Sarah Palin rape jokes? Remember the “C***” t-shirts? Remember the boiling rivers of misogyny that poured from the so-called progressive blogs? Remember the feminism-free feminists who laughed right along?
This stuff metastasizes.
Sexism isn’t selective, and misogyny isn’t something that only applies to certain women. The dudes can’t tell the difference.
Every joke about raping Sarah Palin or her daughter is a joke about raping you.
And the reason jokes like this are acceptable? Sarah Palin is a pro-life conservative, yes, emphasis on pro-life.

And the reason jokes like this are acceptable? Sarah Palin is a pro-life conservative, yes, emphasis on pro-life.
And also a Christian.
Pro life and Christian makes one a target.
I’m already boycotting Empytheadman because even before this episode I found him crude and making fun of everyone.
It’s generally accepted that politicians may be fair game, but their families are off bounds. Apparently Emptyheadman doesn’t agree.
And even at that, you don’t call anyone the names he called Palin. That’s beyond the pale.
Also I got this from Team Sarah:
David Letterman’s latest Top 10 List and late night monologue directed at Governor Palin and her family is absolutely shameful, to say the least. Not only did Letterman’s list include a vulgar sexual reference to the Governor, but his monologue on June 8 went so far as to try to “joke” about 14-year-old Willow Palin being “knocked up” by Alex Rodriquez at a Yankee game.
Granted, much is fair game when it comes to public figures and late night comedy. Children, however, are never “fair game” and should never be the subject of such indecent sexual “jokes”. This attempt at comedy, using the suggestion of statutory rape as a punch line, goes beyond a breach of basic decency. Indeed commentary of this nature reflects a much darker, more disturbing trend that has permeated our supposed “entertainment” viewing.
David Letterman is entitled to his political views just like everyone else, but he is certainly NOT entitled to make explicit and vulgar sexual references toward women and children. We are appalled at such contemptible commentary.
Team Sarah is calling on members to express their views to CBS regarding this serious matter.

DAVID LETTERMAN’S HATE, etc. !
Speaking of anti-Semitism, it’s Jerry Falwell and other fundy leaders who’ve gleefully predicted that in the future EVERY nation will be against Israel (an international first?) and that TWO-THIRDS of all Jews will be killed, right?
Wrong! It’s the ancient Jewish prophet Zechariah who predicted all this in the 13th and 14th chapters of his book! The last prophet, Malachi, explains the reason for this future Holocaust that’ll outdo even Hitler’s by stating that “Judah hath dealt treacherously” and “the Lord will cut off the man that doeth this” and asks “Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother?”
Haven’t evangelicals generally been the best friends of Israel and Jewish persons? Then please explain the recent filthy, hate-filled, back-stabbing tirades by David Letterman (and Sandra Bernhard) against a leading evangelical named Sarah Palin, and explain why most Jewish leaders have seemingly condoned Palin’s continuing “crucifixion”!
While David and Sandra are tragically turning comedy into tragedy, they are also helping to speed up and fulfill the Final Holocaust a la Zechariah and Malachi, thus helping to make the Bible even more believable!
Oh, I usually think Ann Coulter is a bit harsh and too into the “party line” for me, I have to say, her bit in Time about Palin was right on.
The liberal feminazis hate her because she is everything a feminist should be and more. She embraces her strength, her womanhood, her morality, and LIFE. They crucified her politically because she takes what they preach and applies it in a morally just and righteous manner. And she’s consistent.
As for Letterman, it’s been a long time since I watched any of his episodes. He’s tactless and cruel publicly, and he relishes it. He is, in essence, the dregs of society.
Add to that list, MaryRose, “unfunny”.
“Although I greatly enjoy the comedic aspects of many of CBS’s programming, I have to admit, I have recently been greatly disappointed in the programming of one show in particular.
I would like to preface this comment with a clarification: I am not a Republican.
That said, it is with great disgust that I comment on David Letterman’s unnecessary and tactless attacks on the Palin family of late. His behavior has given Republicans and Democrats alike reason to dislike him.
I can laugh at jokes made at the expense of figureheads, politicians, celebrities, even my own friends and family. However, Letterman’s joking has been, to say the absolute least, in EXTREMELY poor taste. From insinuating that Sarah Palin is promiscuous, or at the least, going for that look, to vehement attacks on the daughters, Letterman has recently displayed to the American public a complete lack of respect of ALL American families.
His constant attacks – sans apology – have only managed to further objectify young girls. All young girls, as his comments alluding to rape – or, at the very LEAST, quite inappropriate relations – only further to project the very FALSE image that these such behaviors are both normal and acceptable.
I, personally, believe Mr. Letterman’s statement that he was alluding to Bristol and not Willow Palin on his recent show. However, Bristol Palin is something of a role model for young teens. The technical legality of any reference Letterman *may* have been making made his comments no less deplorable.
If this is the direction in which CBS intends to move, I’m afraid I will have to find alternate programming.
Perhaps Conan O’Brien will prove to be less tactless. Even his ‘masturbating bear’ sketch results in less of a gag reflex than Letterman’s recent programming.”
Thoughts?
Xalisae,
Absolutely true.
Beth:
Your comments are tragiccally insightful.
Sarah Palin would be the first person to stand for Israel because she understands that Israel is the apple of God’s eye and no one will destroy Israel, no one.
I am meeting Ed Kalnins again at the end of the month.
He is Sarah’s pastor and a great, great person.
Even liberals have taken offense.

That’s great HisMan. I’m sure he is a great person as is Sarah!
Beth,
I think your comments are right on. Also Glenn Beck was talking about Israel today and he predicted more antisemitism and countries turning against Israel.
We could be seeing prophesy fulfilled before our eyes.
Joanne,
Wow! I’m glad you posted that. I’m drafting a letter now for all those who advertise on Letterman.
Hillbuzz is right. We need to say ENOUGH.
GIBSON: Roe v. Wade, do you think it should be reversed?
PALIN: I think it should and I think that states should be able to decide that issue…
This is pro-life?
As for Letterman, it’s been a long time since I watched any of his episodes. He’s tactless and cruel publicly, and he relishes it. He is, in essence, the dregs of society.

I quite agree. I also think he’s just a dirty old man who should retire. He’s so NOT funny. And David Letterman, please have the class to publicly APOLOGIZE.
Mballetine you are off topic.
I have no use for Letterman after this.
Letterman, what can I say? Never found him funny. I may have watched an episode or 2 here and there, if I was up late, or he had a guest on that interested me. The last time I watched him he was getting ready to have the Sports Illustrated girl on. Bar Raphael. He acted like a dirty old man while awaiting her to come on. Kept reminding the audience about her. Just acting like a pervvvv! Maybe he IS a dirty old man. Makes you wonder when he’s talking about kids and sex. That’s sick. Not funny!
I don’t have any use for Letterman or Conan. Is it me or does Conan remind you of that bratty juvenile delinquent from 8th grade.
Rather than fill my mind with the garbage that these two spew, I’m using the time to recharge my spiritual batteries.
Have a great day!
Another one that’s always puzzled me was the Woody Allen thing. Where was the outrage? Someone told me that Martin Scorsese was caught with tons of kiddie porn, and he was in the pictures with little boys! I heard that he left the US and if he ever returns, he will be charged. Don’t know how true it is, but I haven’t seen him in a while.^^ All you ever heard was “What a great director he is.” I’m so done with the Hollyweird crowd.
Misogyny – is hatred (or contempt) of women or girls. Misogyny comes from Greek misogunia It is parallel to misandry—the hatred of men or boys. Misogyny is also comparable with misanthropy which is the hatred of humanity generally. ………………………………………… I’d say that Letterman fits the definition.
Ed, I found Conan funny in the beginning of his career, but as of late, he is a sell out! I turned him off long ago. He’s a liberal Catholic. Just like Leno.
I only found the “made moose jerky on Rachael Ray” to be funny.
I am embarrassed to say that the “home office” of the Top 10 list is here in Nebraska, in Wahoo (not where I live).
Liz, to be fair, so did I:]
It could be the writers at fault too.
Letterman seems to be a symptom of growing Hollywood perversion. Perverts express what is in their heart.
His apology is to save face.
He is ashamed that he lost points. Not apologetic for hurt he can cause.
Heather i’m sure Letterman gives the final word on all the jokes.
Would he make the same jokes about Michelle Obama and her girls or ANY Democrat politican and her children?
angel, point taken. I’m definatly not letting him off the hook. He’s a creep, and he would NEVER make that same joke about the Obama girls. Good point!
xppc, that is true!
Back when Conan had Don King and the crowd on, it was HILARIOUS. I’ve been looking for oldschool Conan online, but I can’t find the skits I’m looking for. :(
Also, Max Weinberg holding up one of his drumsticks next to a pic of Harry Potter holding up his wand was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.
xalaxie, one of the funniest Conan episodes I’ve ever seen aired back when he was pretty new. He went to Texas to see if anyone had ever heard of him. The responses were classic. I split my sides laughing!
*oops* correction above post Bar Refaeli. My bad.
If this churlish ogre thinks jokes about “knocking up” a 14 yr old are funny- he’s an even worse mess than previously suspected- and should be locked up. Letterman is a deranged slob- and his stale schtick’s about as funny as a train wreck.
If Sarah Palin is SO silly and irrelevant, why the obsession? Clearly the Left noted her appeal, and are out to eliminate the threat- it’s not like it’s not obvious.
And she’s been highly successful in life while ignoring the left-wing feminist model… this helps to explain the extra dose of venom in the attacks.
Go get em, Sarah- and don’t mind the press, nobody will be listening to them anymore after the pending Obamamania implosion-

There is nowhere for a “comedian” to go once they have exhausted the spewing of all swear words, vulgarity, sexual impropriety and their own bitterness. Look at Rosie.
Buh bye Dave.
There is nowhere for a “comedian” to go once they have exhausted the spewing of all swear words, vulgarity, sexual impropriety and their own bitterness. Look at Rosie.
very true! Hi Carla! :)
Carla, true. Rosie has burned her bridges. She was spouting off about her new show. Only one episode aired and poof, it was GONE! Rosie just did a good job of turning everyone off. First her own show, then The View, then her own show. Her career’s in the toilet.
I suspect Letterman is still bitter about being passed over by NBC for the host slot on the Tonight Show given to Jay Leno. And he’s trying to take out his frustration by attacking innocent bystanders. He’s a sad spectacle.
I meant to say her own talk show…above…and Rosie thinks she can win pointers by being an opinionated blowhard. It all backfired. Oh, and like Palin will ever except Letterman’s invitation to be a guest. He’s taken a few sexual cracks at her too. Isn’t that being a sexist?
I heart Brian Regan and Tim Hawkins!! Keepin it Clean type comedians.
Good morning, Angel, Heather, Doyle and Xalisae!!
Good morning Carla!!!
I just e-mailed my complaint to CBS about Dave and his material.
Me too, Heather!
Attacking any woman based in her sex is an attack on me, the women who read this blog, and every other woman. I am appalled by sexism and misogyny regardless of whether I personally like or approve of the target. I don’t care if the target is Eva Braun.
That’s why feminist bloggers like Reclusive Leftist have regularly and consistently condemned sexist and misogynist attacks on Sarah Palin, Anne Coulter, and other right-wing women.
Amen, Prochoicer!!
Let CBS know too, please. :)
Regardless who the intended target is, such humor is tasteless and shows poor character on Letterman’s part.
If this had been a sex joke about Sasha or Malia Obama, I’m willing to bet that Letterman would be pulled for good!
I used to love Dave and never got into Leno. Over the years Dave has lost much of the spark and goofyness that made it a fun show. He just seems old and bitter — definitely someone who needs a change.
His Palin ‘jokes’ weren’t funny and his statement is not an apology. I don’t plan on watching anymore, I would have considered it, if he had actually apologized. I guess he isn’t sorry for causing any pain — causing pain isn’t funny.
I sure miss Johnny Carson — he came across with good-natured humor — Dave doesn’t anymore.
LB, I liked Carson too.
PCer, good for you!
Pro-choicer:
You are a fair minded person.
I wish you were pro-life.
When we review the talk from letterman, we also see males that have minds shaped by porn. This is how pornish heads express themselves.
somewhat related is imaginations that pro life are a violent group poised to destroy people. This comes from them having violent pictures in their heads and suspecting we do also. Porn users have sexual violence seeds growing in their uncontrolled lusts. We also see that because it tickles his audience. Like sykes joke about the death of rush Limbaugh tickled Obama.
“When we review the talk from letterman, we also see males that have minds shaped by porn.”
No — SOME males have such minds, just as SOME females have such minds. No need to pigeonhole all men and boys in that way.
Going after anyone because of her OR HIS gender isn’t acceptable.
bmmg39,
re-read what you just quoted
“we see males THAT have minds shaped by porn.”
In other words, in this instance, we see a group of males whose minds are shaped by pornography. Not what I’m guessing you read, ‘We see that males have minds shaped by porn.” That would have been inappropriate and sexist.
Mballetine, you are indeed off topic. If you must know, many states had very pro-life laws prior to Roe v. Wade. Allowing every state to make up their own laws would allow this country to be A LOT more pro-life than it is now.
Anywho… I do agree with the general sentiment that David Letterman is trying to dig as deep into the gutter that he can. Jokes used to be about being funny, not about being nasty. These jokes are just nasty and should not be tolerated by the viewing public.
..maybe he should’ve just poured similated gasonline on someone and yelled…”Sarah, you’re killin’ us!!” (See Glenn Beck…OH, i have so many from this guy.)
…Or maybe he should’ve accused Sarah of using her daughters “misfortunes” to elevate her political career. (What did Anne Coulter say about the 9/11 widows?…someone refresh my memory)
..Or maybe, he should’ve just used code words when referring to Palin..oh, I don’t know like when Limpbaugh used the words “Spade” and “Hoe” when talking about the President and first lady …during the campaign.. In the 90s, who did Rush refer to as the whitehouse “pet”? I’m sure you good people called him and let him know what you thought about it. Oh I get it, it’s a liberal, it’s ok to insult their kids…lol.
Shall I go on?
So, pluuueeease, get off your moral high horse here. Clean up your house, and we will clean up ours.
Who is Von Bruner anyway?
Shall I go on?
So, pluuueeease, get off your moral high horse here. Clean up your house, and we will clean up ours.
huh???
“Someone told me that Martin Scorsese was caught with tons of kiddie porn, and he was in the pictures with little boys! I heard that he left the US and if he ever returns, he will be charged. Don’t know how true it is, but I haven’t seen him in a while.”
You’re getting two different stories combined and attributing both of them to the wrong person. Victor Salva was in child porn with a boy; Roman Polanski had sex with a thirteen-year-old girl back in the 70s and will be charged if he comes back to the US. Martin Scorsese’s filming a movie in Massachusetts. I have no investment in the guy one way or the other, but it took me five seconds to look up what he’s doing now, and I think it’s kind of irresponsible of you to post a rumor like that about somebody.
But, yes, people shouldn’t be allowed to get away with criminal behavior because they’re famous and good at their jobs.
I just amazes me how some people think it’s okay to say derogatory things about some public figure’s minor children. People would be up in arms if he’d said something like, “Obama’s daughters are not exactly good-looking kids,” and this is a much worse thing to say than that. There’s something wrong with a person who doesn’t get that what he said was so wrong that he should have never even considered saying it.
Maraudrer, gee sorry. I said it was a rumor.
You see the first part…someone told me!!?? Glad you looked it up!
Some years ago, I used to enjoy watching Leno. Then one night he insulted Pat Buchanan. The next night he insulted the Pope. I turned the TV off and have never watched him after that.
NOW sides with Palin: Letterman’s jokes were “juvenile, sexist”
UPDATE, 6/12, 12:45a: Now Amanda Fortini at Salon has jumped on the anti-misogynist Letterman bandwagon, also calling out feminists who avert their eyes when conservative women are the targets. In an overall good piece just out: If there was any…
Well, this may have done something for Letterman’s career. I didn’t realize he was still on TV. Didn’t he get cancer or have a heart attack several years ago? I just assumed he’d either passed away or retired because I didn’t hear anything about him any more. Didn’t even realize he was still on the air. Also, did the post above say he was only in his 60’s? Is that right? For some reason, I had thought he was at least in the second half of his 8th decade.
