“Jon & Kate Plus Eight” ends
My poor daughter. I do wonder what psychological damage reality tv has wrought. As a teen she love love loved Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica. And we know how that ended.
Then she love love loved Jon & Kate Plus Eight. And last night we saw its demise, thanks also to divorce.
I’ve written a couple times about the Gosselins (here and here), of particular interest to us because Kate conceived both sets of multiples through in vitro fertilization. So I thought it fitting to provide closure.
About the last show The Insider reported…
In the final episode… Jon and Kate Gosselin reflected on their marriage and family.
Kate was disappointed at the ending of the show, saying, “This is a very bittersweet goodbye for me, because I think the kids are already missing it.”
The couple commented separately on the breakdown of their marriage.
Jon said, “I just did kids my whole twenties. Our marriage fell apart and I felt like I was free.” He said that since he got married at 22, maybe he reverted to 23 after the break-up between he and Kate.
While Jon said, “We’re definitely not going to be married ever again,” Kate said, “It always crosses my mind that I should be in the passenger seat and Jon should be driving, every single time…. I never wanted him absent from that driver’s seat.”
Despite their divorce, both parents expressed a desire to work together for the sake of their kids….
But they will not ride quietly off into the sunset. The Associated Press reported:
Along with the divorce battle between the Gosselins, who’ve been wed for a decade, the end of Jon & Kate leaves unresolved a thicket of lawsuits entangling the warring spouses and the network.
Recently, Jon Gosselin filed a lawsuit against TLC, claiming television producers violated PA’s child labor laws in filming the show. It was filed in response to a network lawsuit alleging Gosselin failed to meet his obligations to TLC. (The network has said it retains an exclusive talent arrangement with him, as well as the rest of the family.)
In a separate matter, Gosselin was ordered to return $180,000 to a joint account he shared with his estranged wife….

My parents live near them. They’re as asinine in person as they are on TV. What a shame for their poor innocent children. Once again children are viewed as merely a commodity…to be used as you see fit. Oh no, Jon and Kate…don’t change your behavior for the sake of your kids. Just keep on fornicating, drugging and spending cash all day! I can’t stand both of those selfish parents. Good riddance to the both of them!
My sentiments, exactly!
John can’t spell penalty. I think he’s the bad guy in this. Kate was great!
I thought I read she got pregnant by IUI? (look it up).
Glad to see the show end. GOOD RIDDANCE!
Now maybe TLC can give some love to its other big family with multiples: Table for 12.
Maybe people will stop breeding children that our fragile planet can’t support.
Am I the only prolifer here concerned about the environment?
phillymiss that is awful! as a mother of four i hear this all the time! yes i care about our environment, does that mean i am done having children? NO! having kids is not going to be the end of our world! raising kids that do not care or have respect for the environment will! if god did not want so many kids on the planet don’t you think he would have put a limit on the number of times a woman could get pregnant? he is obviously not worried so neither am i!
As much as Kate Gosselin repeats ad infinitum “she does it all for her kids” her attitude and demeanor say it all… She’s profited from those innocents…why are the parents of other sextuplets in this country not on a “reality” show?? Don’t they *deserve* the money? No, those parents have chosen a LIFE for their children. J&K did nothing more than pimp their kids for money and their “fame”…God help them as they grow older and realize their whole childhood was and can be viewed by millions of people. People should “google” the Dionne quintuplet story and know what a mess their lives became because of media overexposure…how much more these kids will endure with their DVDs lining the shelves at Target for years to come…
I watched that show once years ago.
The whole thing really breaks my heart. How might they have done if they had a true vision for each of these children? I know so many parents who have large families. They all have a vision and really live to help their children grow and flourish and bless others.
I think this couple is throwing away happiness and fulfillment with both hands and reaching out for something that will never make them happy.
Makes me choke up.
he is obviously not worried so neither am i!

he obviously isn’t worried about abortion either, so neither am i.
Kate did not have IVF. She took fertility drugs.
Becky, I am sorry if I offended you, but then again I have the right to my opinion.
phillymiss, yes you did offend me but you are right we are entitled to our own opinions. you caught me on a bad day. i was shopping the other day with my kids (very well-behaved kids, i might add) and the women behind me were saying that people are so irresponsible when they choose to have large families! now i don’t know if they were talking about me or not but i was very hurt, your comment just upset me all over again. sorry i let my anger get the better of me!
I think there is a basic human instinct in feeling that others are outdoing you. Whether you run faster, or have more money, or more kids, there is a gut reaction. I think there is a primal jealousy. Your genes are beating their genes, etc. It is emotional, not logical. I mean how many of us are sitting back thinking, “Wow won’t it be great when the people like me are gone, and the others take over.”
Becky, I am the youngest of four, so thank GOD my mom decided to have a large family! I hope I am so blessed and that I too can have several more children. The Lord created the earth FOR PEOPLE…not for animals or plants. He created the earth specifically to be our home and commanded us to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. We ARE to be good stewards of God’s magnificent creation so yes, we should be concerned about the environment. But to worry that the earth is “fragile” and can’t support us in not biblical and shows a lack of faith and trust in God and His word. The Bible clearly shows us that the earth will exist till Jesus comes back and destroys it and creates a new heaven and new earth. So stop worrying Phillymiss! There is room enough on this planet for all souls God creates!
he is obviously not worried so neither am i!

God is not mocked, Hal. What a man sows he will reap. Several people on this site have attempted to communicate to you God’s love, mercy and justice, and statements like this are a slap in the face to believers. I will share with you another attribute of God and that is His longsuffering. I see God save children from death regularly. I see Him change lives forever even in your beloved culture of death. Do not be misled that because He has not poured out His wrath yet, He does not care. A billion + voices in His care (two are your own children, Hal) are a constant reminder. Woe to you, Oh Earth and Sea, for the Devil sends the beast with wrath, because he knows the time is short
Becky,
Actually, the “fragile” Earth has abundant resources for its population plus quite a bit yet. The problem is not in overpopulation but in poor distribution of resources. We’re not doing enough to try to move around what we’re being provided. Well, that, and we’re coming up with cheap and empty alternatives to the good stuff. What we need is for the families on this Earth, large and small alike, to come together and behave as good stewards, as we’ve been called. Our behaviors show a lack of respect for the resources we’re given, and unfortunately, that is what makes our Earth “fragile”-our poor stewardship.
My mother has “bred” 9 and is expecting number 10 in March. My life would lack a richness and fullness that my siblings have added were my mother not a “breeder.”
You have a right to your opinion, but it is rude and thoughtless to interject in any conversation by making statements that belittle others (and consequently yourself) in such a way. It is calloused, rude, and uninformed to refer to large families as “breeding” and to imply that the responsibility for the Earth’s poor state lies solely on their shoulders.
Please, the next time that you comment, reconsider your arguments and how they might sound to others. Reconsider your information. Check your facts. And treat others with the dignity and respect you would prefer.
To correct a couple of things:
1. How Kate had the kids… according to her book which I read and one of the shows, she had the twins using fertility treatments but she DID have the sextuplets by IVF (several rounds of fertility treatments didn’t work).
2. RE: Concern for the environment by having so many kids – people are clueless about this. People like Gosselins and others are barely keeping our replacement rate at 2.3. But most of Europe is way BELOW replacement rate, around 1.3-1.7. Meanwhile Islamic people believe in large families (replacement rate on them has been estimated as high as 8.1) and they are totally against abortion. i.e. if we don’t get our heads out of our Southern region, our society as we know it will end, the world will become Islamic and that may solve “the Christian problem” (they believe either convert or die) as well as the abortion and s/s marriage problem… they have no tolerance for alternate lifestyles either. So thank folks who are having more kids – they MAY at least, save American society at the numbers we are now.
Mary Rose,
I think you might want to direct your comments to Phillymiss.
Klynn,
Are you thinking of heading to MOA for Sarah Palin’s book signing? Can you email me?
carla@jillstanek.com
On Dr.Phil, she said she had IUI with fertiility drugs for the sextuplets. She said they had an ultrasound to see how many eggs were released, and the Dr thought it was only two or three. High order muliples are way more common with fertility drugs than IVF.
Oh, dangit, am I the idiot or what?
Becky, you have my apologies.
I, of course, meant that post to be directed at phillymiss.
Thank you, Carla! :)
You are welcome. :)
Happy Thanksgiving!
apology accepted maryrose! lol!
i just wanted to add one more thing, it is large families that know best about re-using! we don’t use things once and get rid of it. we recycle everything from clothes, to toys, to car seats. when i look at many other families with one or two kids you see alot of use it once and throw it away mentalities.
