Abortion clinic after patient’s death: “Nothing happened here”
It’s too bad that abortion rights “pioneer” Ruth Proskauer Smith, a founder of NARAL, died in Manhattan last Friday at the age of 102.
Had Ruth only held on 3 more days she could have read about one of the fruits of her labor, pardon the pun, the tragic death Alexandra Nuñez in nearby Queens at a completely legal abortion/plastic surgery mill.
According to WPIX:
Emergency officials responded to A1 Medicine at 95-45 Roosevelt around 3:15p Monday.
A woman, believed to be in her 30’s, was reportedly bleeding heavily and rushed to Elmhurst Hospital Center where she was later pronounced dead.
Apparently the abortionist severed an artery, causing Nuñez to go into cardiac arrest. According to the NY Daily News today…
Nuñez [was] a single mother of 4….
She had told her family that she was going to a doctor’s office in Newark to have a cyst removed – and her death stunned her eldest daughter.
“I’m upset because I never got a chance to say goodbye,” said Daisy Davila, 19. “She didn’t want anyone to go with her. I made dinner and lunch [yesterday] hoping she would come back.”
“We’re not angry. We just want to know what happened,” said Davila, who insisted that her mother did not believe in abortions. “She was a strong woman, always happy. I looked up to her.”
An employee at the clinic – a one-stop gynecology and plastic surgery clinic that was still seeing patients yesterday – insisted that everything had gone well at the second-floor medical facility.
“The patient was transferred to the hospital, she didn’t die at the clinic,” said the woman, who refused to give her name. “Nothing happened here.”
Abortion proponents claim mothers who find themselves in crisis pregnancies haven’t received proper sex ed on the use of contraceptives. What about this tragic case? So heartbreaking. This just didn’t have to be, an obvious outcome of societal breakdown.
I found this odd graphic accompanying a Gothamist story on the death…
Here we had a legal front alley abortion.
So was the Gothamist strangely asserting that abortions should be kept legal or women will die – next to a story about a woman who died at a legal abortion mill?
Or was it trying to say, “Stop illegal coat hanger abortions that kill women but carry on with legal hack job abortions that kill women?”
Or was the editor simply an idiot who thought because this woman died the abortion must certainly have been illegal – in a country where abortion is legal on demand throughout all 9 months of pregnancy….
And they say she was the mother of four NO she was the mother of FIVE
They claim back alley abortions are not safe. This must be a back alley abortuary.
My prayers goes out to the Alexandra Nunez family.
I am sickened every time I read a story such as this. The circumstances are really bizarre. Ms. Nunez told her daughter she was having a cyst removed. Did she really have an abortion?
Apparently Janet.
She died killing her baby.
Very tragic.
I don’t care if it is an illegal abortion or a legal abortion that killed her- when will people start realizing that the common thread to all of these deaths and injuries and injustices is abortion and stop calling it a positive good? Abortion is what killed these women and children, so why call it good? Stop fighting to make it a positive this and that and start fighting to get rid of it. Put it alongside robbery or other signs of social injustice where it belongs. But why do pro-choicers insist on putting in the light of happiness?
Peace and justice, people, peace and justice.
God be merciful to her. Having had four children, she knew the miracle of life, the fragility of an infant, the beauty of such dependence.
Who is the father, and why was he not man enough to stand by this woman he cared enough to unite himself with and the child that issued from this union?
This is beyond heart-wrenching.
“Abortion is against everything that requires faith for success”.
Our society is guilty as well for this young mother’s death. For we taught her that abortion is the solution rather than looking to a Holy and Loving God for the answer.
This is very sad and tragic beyond words.
Abortion is never the right answer.
Well I wonder what the proaborts would say about this woman’s death? RJ
I wonder if the clinic lied to her and said it was just a cyst and she wasn’t pregnant? Clinics have been known to lie to women who weren’t even pregnant just to get them to pay for surgery. Who knows? This is very sad. I feel so badly for her family.
So very tragic.
@Sydney M: She was the one that lied – the cyst was her cover up story. Notice that she told her family she would be in Newark having a cyst removed but she was actually in Queens for the abortion.
Oh! Tookshire, you know I didn’t catch that! This story reminds me of Laura Hope Smith. She was 22 and secretly went to have an abortion and died while having it.
Can you even imagine the SHOCK to these poor families? SAFE and legal? Or just legal? Where is NARAL’s outrage?
Is it just a coincidence that this victim was of a minority race? :(
Very sad.
I wonder if the dr. used a the same thingy magig used for liposuction to perform abortions. I know those have very sharp ends to break up and cut through fatty tissue. (I watch Discovery Health once and a while) I would assume this could very easily cut an artery.
What a sad tragedy for this woman, her baby and her family.
The employee who was interviewed claiming nothing happened at their clinic is and idiot. Alexandria was transferred to the hospital. What does that tell ya? Alexandria’s life was obviously in grave danger.
When someone is shot with a gun and bleeds out as drs. at a hospital are trying to save them, does that mean the shooter is innocent of creating the death and the drs. are at fault?
…and there are still women dying needlessly from pregnancy complications:

If you’re going to get up in arms, make sure you’re not directing your anger selectively.
Also, it might be a good idea to quit throwing around the usual tropes. This woman wasn’t “duped” into getting an abortion by a shoddy clinic. She had a boatload of kids, probably couldn’t support another one [whether physically, emotionally, financially, etc…and this includes the experience of pregnancy itself, not just HAVING the kid], and decided to get an abortion. She lied about it, too, not wanting to blow her pro-life cover (read quotations from daughter about mother’s position on abortion). Curious…when the going gets tough, the pro-lifers get abortions.
Using an example of hypocrisy (which I don’t see any of us here supporting, by the way) does not invalidate the entire stance.
I’m here, and you already know my story, and there are sooooo many women like me here, with similar stories about how their babies were almost reduced to “choice”, but who now live. We see our children every day that we were once urged to throw away, and we want to save every other child like them.

WAIT, what happened to CHOICE?
and your article, Megan, if you would’ve read it, states simply that women are dying due to unnecessary medical procedures (c-sections). Much like this woman died because of an unnecessary medical procedure (abortion). So yeah, let’s end abortion and unnecessary c-sections. I’m glad we’re on the same page, Megan.
I’m merely illustrating a point. This blog vilifies “abortionists” and their supposed “abortion mills” while women are dying either during or soon after giving birth. Childbirth can be dangerous, and it has been medicalized unnecessarily, yet I don’t see much activism in that arena here. The lack of attention to pregnancy and its attendant harms (whether for women who don’t receive prenatal care, or are in poor physical condition to begin with, or experience unexpected complications) points to something important: you don’t really care about women or their well-being during pregnancy.
Exactly, xalisae. Surgical procedures have inherent risks. The pro-choicers tell women that having an abortion is little more than having a menstrual period. Hardly. I don’t know how women can take the abortion pills, etc….. What a scary experience it must be. Not knowing when the abortion will happen. Ugh. I just read that there is a new abortion pill that can be taken up to five days after a missed period. What’s next? Ten days? Twenty?
Megan,
What you said is equivalent to saying that since someone hasn’t spoken out about funding for AIDS research, they have no right to say anything about the genocide in Darfur.
We have actually discussed at length (long before you ever showed up, by the way) underhanded lawyers like John Edwards making millions off of suing doctors in frivolous lawsuits over things that aren’t their fault, causing those doctors and others like them to increase the rates of c-section to try and avoid such suits. As a conservative, you’ll find I advocate things like tort reform which not only would help this problem, but also lower the cost of healthcare for everyone, including those women you talked about with a lack of prenatal care (which those women do have access to already through things like medicaid).
But see…we can say all of that, AND we can speak out against abortion which not only SOMETIMES kills the mother, but ALWAYS (nearly) kills her child.
Megan…I don’t understand your point. You just said that childbirth is dangerous, and yet has been medicalized unnecessarily. If its dangerous isn’t is NECESSARY that its been medicalized? You just contradicted yourself!
On a side note, please everyone pray for my friend. She just told me so happily she was pregnant yesterday and called me sobbing today. She is having a second miscarriage. She wants so badly to have a child and its just been years of disappointment and frustration for her and her husband. I hope God will bless her soon with another baby that she can meet face to face.
Sydney M.,
Praying for your friend. God bless.
I’m so sorry, Sydney. I am praying for your friend. Miscarriage is so very difficult.
Mm, but I’d still say that any compassion direct towards women on this blog is merely a ruse for further fetish fetishism. Rarely are postings of abortion horror stories accompanied by discussions of pregnancy mortality and tort reform. It’s selective reporting, and allows the ideologically-blinded to believe obstetricians are all feel good Mr. Nice Guys. Plus, post-abortive women are considered either evil or delusional, which a) indicates a complete lack of understanding for why women pursue abortions b) doesn’t say much for female autonomy. If 1.2 million abortions are performed in the US each year, there sure are a lot of insane female satanists walking amongst us.
also, dear Conscience: eat glass.
Do you have some sort of filter which allows you only to read tidbits from this site which conform to your narrow worldview?
Also, I think it’s supercute you’re going to come here out of the blue and tell US what we do and do not talk about all the time. It’s great, really.
As I have said before, numerous things have come and gone as topics of discussion here. Just because you haven’t seen them doesn’t mean they don’t exist.
Also, how many times do I and others here have to tell you: There are people here who have had abortions. There are people here who have been in crisis pregnancy situations where many told us it would be to our benefit to abort (myself included). It’s easy to think for a moment “Wow, I could make this all go away, and it’d be like it never happened.” Many women let themselves believe that, because it’s palatable to them. However, if you are a woman with any sense of reality, you know that that isn’t really the case. You brought another human life into this world, and abortion kills that life, and you can never get it back, ever.
