Counter-culture: Star Bollywood couple celebrates new daughter
In India, there’s still a huge preference for sons. That’s why sex determination is banned. Despite the ban, there are fewer little girls here than boys and the numbers keep getting bleaker.
It’s tempting to think the buzz around one little girl will change this.
In a Bollywood film, it might have. But the real world has its own script.

Parents who engage in sex selection are perhaps the most selfish individuals on the planet. They contribute to a climate in which the sons they so desperately seek for their own selfish purposes will have no spouses of their own. The only justice in it is for such parents to live to a ripe old age and witness the suffering in their sons’ lives that they fashioned out of their own narcissism, an end to the family name wrought by their own greed and contempt for their daughters.
This couple starred together in a movie when they were single called “Kuch Naa Kaho.” It’s worth a look for its pro-father, pro-family, pro-child subtext–which would be shocking to the Hollywood mainstream.
A lot of Bollywood films have values that stand contrary to the standard Hollywood fair. Amitabh Bachchan and his wife Jaya (Abhishek’s parents) are in the very pro-family film Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham… which I highly recommend. It’s long, like most Bollywood, but it’s very sweet and enjoyable.
Granted, I would highly recommend a lot of Bollywood. I started my obsession with Main Hoon Na and haven’t looked back since. ;)
Alice,
Glad to see another Bollywood fan here! I love Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Ghan! One of my favorite dvds. Main Hoon Na is one of the Shah Rukh movies I have yet to see. :)
I’ve never gotten into Bollywood. Looks like I’ll have to start thanks to you guys.
All these goochy-goochy-goo names…gotta get used to that.
And I must say, Aish-whatever-her-name is stunningly beautiful. I remember Oprah couldn’t keep her eyes off her eyes when she was a guest on her show.
carder,
Here’s a start for you. Aishwariya has been called the most beautiful woman in the world. Her career actually started by winning Miss World. She’s no doubt the best female dancer in Bollywood. The second link also stars her father-in-law, the grand emeritus of Bollywood.

For all you time travelers out there, my second link was to a “Bunty Aur Babli” youtube video.
