New Stanek poll: Which GOP presidential candidate will be the next to drop?
UPDATE, 11:55a: Well, that was quick. Despite her pre-Caucus protests, Michele Bachmann has suspended her campaign in the wake of her poor showing in Iowa yesterday. I’m posting a new poll with her name omitted. Congrats to the 20 of you who got it right on this short-lived poll!
9:34a: The Iowa Caucus results are in, and they certainly are fascinating. From the AP this morning…
In the closest finish in Iowa Caucus history, Romney edged out Santorum by just eight votes – a virtual upset in the mind of this conservative. Paul also did well. Meanwhile Bachmann, Gingrich, Huntsman, and Perry all placed poorly.
So I have a new poll question up:
In the aftermath of the Iowa caucus, who will be the next GOP presidential candidate to drop from the race?
Vote on the lower right side of the home page.
Here were the results of my previous poll, all the more interesting given last night’s results…
If you voted, find your own brightly colored flag on either the U.S. or International map…
As always, make comments to either the previous or current poll here, not on the Vizu website.
michelle B. is dropping today i believe.

Heather, have been to Shaker Heights but never lived there. Only lived in Cleveland at a very young age, like 6 months old.
Are you going to go and cheer your beloved President? ;)

Michele Bachmann has now quit. My guess is those votes mostly go to Paul in spite her rhetoric about Paul’s supposedly dangerous Middle East positions. If that had happened last night, Paul would have either won or at least tied Iowa’s straw poll. Combined with the article you posted about his delegate strategy, he may be a lot stronger than he appears.
Perry was originally seen as the anti-Romney vote until he self-destructed, some have indicated, so it is possible Ron Paul could pick up a lot of those votes if he bows out, which he hinted at last night. However, as of this morning, probably because of Bachmann’s exit, Perry is now indicating he’s going after South Carolina, so it’s anyone’s guess as to whether his current supporters will stay with him or jump ship.
On another line of thought, after New Hampshire, my guess is that support for Romney will begin to dry up. Last night’s vote showed more than anything that most of the GOP base does not want Romney. If so, and depending how many of his supporters are pro-aborts, most of those votes will probably go to Santorum, although Huntsman or Roemer could pick up some of the pro-abort votes if they are still in the race since Santorum is pro-life. I suppose it’s even possible some of the pro-aborts would vote for Paul since one could possibly interpret his position on Roe v. Wade to be more moderate than Santorum’s.
If Gingrich quits too early, not sure where those votes will go, but my hunch is Santorum will get the majority of them. I hope I’m wrong about that. If so, he will probably be unstoppable. I could live with Santorum as president because of his pro-life position, but with strong reservations because of his support for globalism and unconstitutional spending. More so than a Romney presidency, in any case.

Oops … article about delegate strategy I mentioned above was posted by someone else. My bad. :-(

Perry is probably the next “big one” to go. I think Bachman’s supporters will back up Santorum.

Hunstman should be. He did not even get 1% of vote.

why does it – I can’t stand Huntsman – but he did not “compete” in IA, so his showing is pretty meaningless – he will not drop until he loses a state where he tries, like NH hopefully

Tom, good, interesting post by you. Kudos for mentioning Buddy Roemer – don’t believe I have seen anybody else do that, anywhere. ;)
I don’t think Newt or Ron Paul really expected to be that competitive, all in all. Really don’t think Newt wants to be President, period, but he’s certainly having influence.
No matter what, I wouldn’t count Romney out. Should he really have to turn his resources against Santorum, he will, and with substantial effect, IMO.
Also, I wonder what the Iowa caucuses really mean, here? Good grief – Mike Huckabee won last year. It was interesting, as at times Perry, Bachmann, Paul, Cain, Gingrich and Romney all led in the polls, there, this time around.

I think this quickly becomes a three way race between Romney (who will easily win NH), Newt (who could win SC and/or Florida), and Santorum (who won’t win for a while, but will stick around).
Next one to drop? Huntsman. Unless he really jumps in NH (not likely), he’ll be staring at some tough states. Perry seems like he wants to hang in through SC and see what happens there.
Huntsman is next to drop, followed by Perry, followed by Newt, followed by Santorum.

It looks like bachmann has gone. Perry will be next if he hasn’t already decided. So after him it would probably be huntsman (he was never in the hunt). Newt will hang around for a while before he takes the money and runs. Paul will play ‘fly in the ointment’ until he gets bored and then depart.
Which leaves us with santorum and romney. I can’t see santorum having enough appeal across the entire country to beat romney, but I’d love to see him hang in there and announce bachmann as his running mate in an attempt to improve his chances.
Santorum and bachmann, the dream team!

Tom,
When you say you don’t like Santorum’s ‘globalism’; what exactly are you referring to?

Reality,
More likely you’ll be looking at Santorum and Ryan.

If Obama had any integrity HE’D drop out. He said if the economy didn’t improve he would be voted out.
But he’s hoping the unwashed masses will credit him for treading water. Unfortunately, we’re going over the waterfall.
