Law & Order actress: Failed adoption “devastating” but had “happy ending”
It was nothing short of devastating. But… it was probably the greatest, happiest ending.
I mean, it was so painful for us, but it was deeply joyful and deeply right for her.
~ Law & Order SVU star Mariska Hargitay, remarking on a past failed adoption after the baby’s mother decided to parent, as quoted by The Daily Dish, April 4.
Hargitay and husband, actor Peter Hermann, have since adopted two of their three children (Andrew and Amaya, pictured right, with Hargitay). Hargitay is also the daughter of now-deceased pro-life actress Jayne Mansfield.

I love Mariska Hargitay. I also love her mother, who Is actually buried in my hometown. Jayne Mansfield grew up in the same area I lived all my life. It was absolutely tragic what happened to her. We needed more pro-life beauty queens.
Wow, that really surprises me that she’s pro-adoption and had a strong pro-life mother (article doesn’t say if *she* is pro-life). The long running character she plays, Olivia Benson is *the* most rabid pro-abortionist on the show, hates adoption, and thinks all pregnancies conceived in rape should be aborted asap. I realize it’s a character she plays and not her, but the diconomi is surprising. I love that show, but get really, really tired of her character always pushing abortion as the best thing for mother and baby when the situation isn’t perfect.
Jespren, where do you get that Mariska’s character is that rabidly proabortion? I’m not saying she’s a pro-life character by any means (doesn’t seem many of them on that show are, but, her character was herself conceived in rape, remember?
@Jespren: No kidding. Especially since Benson (character) was conceived in rape herself. That character is really abortion happy and it never made any sense to me, since her story would be really pro-life if she weren’t always pushing abortion. Clearly the writers wrote that backstory for the ~*DRAMAS*~ and not for any realistic emotional responses. I hope she is IRL pro-life but…well, she’s a really convincing pro-abort in the show.
Her show is one of my faves, but I never knew her character was proabort. Disappointed.
I’ve watched so many seasons of L&O: SVU and never thought she was “rabidly” pro-abort. More like hesitatingly supports someone’s choice to choose to do something wrong knowing she wouldn’t be able to change the other person’s mind. Especially knowing her character was the product of rape.
But I’m so thankful that she is so humble in the fact that she acknowledged the dignity and respect for the birth mother in what seems to be such a hard decision. To be THAT close to having a precious baby in your arms only for the birth mom to say “No” must be very hard.
*folds hands*
“Marishka Hargitay!” *bows*
;>) !
Mariska Hargitay herself is pro-choice. I’ve found some articles online mentioning her at fundraisers for PP and NARAL.
Hmmm. Looks like she was a committee chair for the 2008 L.A. Power of Choice Reception.

Bleh.
Unfortunately, prochoice seems to be a default position in Hollywood. There are some exceptions of course, but generally, its your best bet.
Bah. I dislike her. My fiance and I were housesitting for his folks and watched a couple episodes on his day off. I wanted to punch the flippin’ T.V. thanks to Benson. DUDE IS 20, CHICA IS 15. PROSECUTE HIS @$$ FOR STATUTORY RAPE!!!
But nooooo, she accuses the mother of being abusive because she actually gives a flip about her daughter….UGH. Just…don’t get me started!!! >_<
JDC,
Breitbart actually spoke at a Students for Life gathering about the topic of abortion in Hollywood:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzUzcGkMP5w&feature=player_embedded
She gave a brilliant, tender interview on the Today show today. I watched it and thought–she needs to be a Life spokesperson!! She talked about what a big adoption advocate she was and that her life was entirely blessesdby her 2 new babies. It was an incredible witness to the power of a selfless act.
I don’t know about her PERSONAL views on abortion, but i used to LOVE the show until I noticed how PRO-ABORTION the show its self seems to be…the writers are obviously PRO-ABORTION, and I got sick of how that was shoved down the viewers throats every chance they got, so I stopped watching.
Thanks for the link, X. I was just thinking about him after I wrote the comment, as I remembered reading that he said something on the topic.
This is a bit off-topic, but speaking of the entertainment industry, it looks like October Baby is a surprise hit:

I saw it and while I thought it was a bit long and slow in parts, I enjoyed it, and would give it a B. I wish I could see it 50,000 times just to make it a huge hit and annoy the pro-aborts, who are already frothing at the mouth about it. If you didn’t see it, please go and do so. If you did already see it, go see it again . . . and again . . . and again . . . and buy it when it comes out on video!
Really? Only one other person saw “The Love Guru”? Ok, well, I guess we’ll have to wait a few more years for the Mariska Hargitay Visitor Center. I’ll just put my meditation cushion back in the closet.
I like Mariska Hargitay. Her non-profit does a lot of good for sexual assault and abuse victims. It’s disappointing that she is pro-choice though.
Was trying to leave a link about the episode involving misoprostol and felony abortion but the site won’t let me (probably for security reasons) in that one the guy who forced the abortion was actually charged with a crime-google it if you’re interested, it was pretty thought provoking.

(Denise) As noted, her mother, Jayne Mansfield, might have persuaded her to believe abortion should be illegal but JM died when Mariska was small.
Working with rape victims might lead many people to believe that abortion should be legal because it might seem psychologically impossible for at least some to carry to term and give birth.
Personally, I would like to see much more done to prevent such pregnancies in the first place. Abortion is always ugly but carrying to term may just not be possible. I remember when I was in high school. A “good girl” (who was not me) said, “If I got raped and pregnant, I don’t know what I’d do. I really don’t know what I’d do.”
Yes, I know that Rebecca Kiessling was conceived in rape as was Ethel Waters. Other great people have been similarly conceived.
Yeah… I like SVU, I can’t watch it all that often because it’s a bit intense for me, but I don’t really see them as pushing an agenda (besides the agenda that sex offenders suck, lol). Christopher Meloni’s character is Catholic and strongly anti-abortion, it’s an interesting foil to Hargitay’s character. They do tend to show both sides of the issue. There was the one that MPQ mentioned, and I remember one episode about a couple who stole embryos from an IVF clinic. The embryos ended up dying, and the guy who stole them was shot by the father of some of the embryos, because his wife died in Iraq and those embryos was his last chance to have a child with her. That was a pretty interesting episode. The man who stole the embryos tried to get himself charged with murder, since he made the point that the embryos were human beings and the fact that he caused their deaths was equivalent to murder. All in all, it’s a pretty interesting show.
The show is definitely biased toward “choice.” I’ve always seen Benson as sort of conflicted and confused about her own situation. What I don’t get is Stabler! Four kids. Such a waffle. What happened to that guy?
That’s a fair assessment of Benson’s character, I think. She has a lot of issues from the circumstances of her conception and birth, compounded by her mother’s abuse and alcoholism. I don’t see where you are getting that about Stabler. He flat out calls abortion murder in at least one episode, he is open in a lot of episodes about his Catholicism, his opposition to pornography, etc. I think it does better than most shows (think, like Gray’s Anatomy) showing a more balanced picture of the pro-life side rather than making us all look like loons.
Lol apparently I’m a fanboy of that show, I didn’t realize that. It’s a good show!
Jack,
You’re right about the Stabler character having been solidly traditional on most issues. I had seen every episod from the first till about two years ago. Only because some show wound up at the same time that I gave first dibs.
We can always hope that these adoptions cause her to rethink her Hollywood knee-jerk support of abortion.
Being pro-choice isn’t a “Hollywood knee jerk reaction”. I look at it more as not being an ignorant prick. It is a women’s right to choose.
“ignorant prick”? First of all, you’ll find most of us here in favor of prenatal human rights ill-equipped physically for that term to apply. Secondly, you’ll find the ignorance abounds on the pro-legal-abortionist side of things, as you’ve demonstrated here with your use of euphemism: “It is a woman’s right to choose.”
Choose what? If you seem to not even be able to elaborate on what is actually being chosen, where does the real ignorance lie?
OOOOh, X, I think we got a live one!
Good, Cournay. I’m in the mood to annihilate right now.
Yeah, never troll for a fish way bigger than you. You’re gonna sink.
