Pro-life news brief 7-2-13

- Kirsten Powers isn’t standing with Wendy Davis. She also points out the obvious false claim that 37 out of 42 abortion clinics will close:
In addition to the limit on late-term abortions, the Texas legislature sought to pass regulations on abortion clinics similar to what was passed in Pennsylvania in 2011 after the Gosnell horror. The New York Times warned that the Texas bill “could lead to the closing of most of Texas’s 42 abortion clinics.” That sounds familiar. In 2011, the Pennsylvania ACLU claimed a post-Gosnell bill “would effectively close most and maybe all of the independent abortion clinics in Pennsylvania.” Last month, a Pennsylvania news site reported that “several” abortion clinics have closed, which isn’t quite the Armageddon the abortion-rights movement predicted.
- Betsy Woodruff discusses some of the threats pro-life legislators in Texas have had to deal with:
State senator Donna Campbell [pictured left], who issued the third point of order against Davis’s filibuster (which ended it), has also been the target of extensive verbal abuse from pro-choice protesters, according to her spokesman Jon Oliver.
They’ve received Facebook messages and e-mails saying, “I hope you’re raped” and “I hope your daughter’s raped,” Oliver tells me.
- Abortionist Kermit Gosnell has changed his mind again and will apparently plead guilty to federal drug charges less than a week after rejecting the plea.
- Both houses of the Delaware legislature have unanimously passed their minimum abortion regulation expansion:
The House unanimously passed the Senate-approved bill, sponsored by Sen. Robert Venables, D-Laurel. The measure, which now goes to Gov. Jack Markell for his signature, allows clinic employees to lodge complaints with public health officials that could prompt an inspection. It also mandates independent accreditation of any facility that performs invasive procedures, directly targeting Planned Parenthood, which accredits its own facilities.
- West Virginia’s attorney general’s attempt to get abortion clinics in his state to provide him with information about their practices wasn’t met with open arms:
The clinic’s response likely is not what Morrisey had in mind.
“The center is not in the position of providing substantive responses to your letter,” executive director Sharon Lewis wrote. “Our center is a defendant in a civil litigation matter and, upon advice of counsel, we must decline to respond to your inquiries and allow the discovery process and justice system to address those matters.”
Lewis is referring to a suit brought against the clinic last month by Itai Gravely, 26, who alleges Dr. Rodney Lee Stephens [pictured right] continued an abortion after she told him to stop due to excessive pain. The lawsuit also said Stephens left parts of the fetus in her uterus.

Well, Senator Campbell is a female doctor. Seems pretty difficult to ad hominem. “Lawmakers, either get out of the vagina business or go to medical school” certainly rings hollow. Hence, here we are…
Such lovely people, these.
And I’m sure that every message Wendy Davis has received has been brimming with nothing but love and support.
Maybe Donna would like to compare notes with some other folks. People like Jessica Ahlquist perhaps.

Mat. Anna,
I lived through the abuse of the liberal occupiers myself at the Wisconsin capital when the unionistas were trying to disrupt passage of Act 10. They are a vile bunch. Really. Nothing is below them. In Wisconsin most of the ‘occupiers’ were bussed in so I would guess the majority of people protesting at the Texas capital were not even citizens of Texas. These ‘pro-aborts’ are paid by ‘Move On’ and other Democratic front organizations to occupy and disrupt. They are really ugly people. I had to get between the unionistas who continually came up behind peaceful Act10 supporters to harass them and blow horns in their ears.
Ugly comments and violent threats are nothing new. I have heard the same while praying peacefully outside Planned Parenthood. Verbal abuse reveals the character of the issuer.
Aggression is an outward means to take control when a person or group perceives a lack of self-confidence or power. If abortion supporters were not feeling defeated, they would be less hostile.
A representative of hospitals opposed the bill because it would require abortionists to have admitting privileges which she explained hospitals do not extend to those who do not have a practice which includes procedures done in the hospitals. She sounded like a lawyer and I had to think about what she meant. I finally came to the conclusion that she must be referring to doctors whose business is limited almost completely to doing abortions, because an ob/gyn would generally have a practice which would mean she would have patients in the hospital for labor and delivery as well as gyn surgeries. Only an abortionist who just does abortion and little else would have a practice so limited that he would otherwise never need to admit a patient to a hospital.

We got up at 4:00 am and to the capitol at about 8:30 am, waited 2 hours to register to speak. I was called about 8:30 pm to speak. Anyway, all morning the crowd was pretty much all blue shirts, pro-life. By the time the pro aborts got out of bed and down to the capitol it was mid afternoon. And by the time we left at almost 11:00 pm, the pro aborts were whining that there were more pro aborts than pro lifers and that the committee should have to listen to thousands more speakers 90% of them off topic. Some big dollars were spent by pro aborts because they had mountains of food down on the capitol extension floor on E2. Basically they just told the college kids to put on their orange UT shirts and show up to the capitol just a couple of blocks from campus for all the free food and party at the capitol. That was about 9:00 pm and they were still partying at about 11:00 pm when we left.
