Planned Parenthood’s abortion clinic art gallery
Management at the Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Memphis, Tennessee, decided they needed to class up their act. Abortion just isn’t chic on its own.
Apparently unaware of the phrases, “putting lipstick on a pig,” which means to “mak[e] superficial or cosmetic changes [in] a futile attempt to disguise the true nature of a product,” and ”whitewashed tombs,” which means to “look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of the bones of the dead and everything unclean,” Planned Parenthood commissioned original artwork to beautify the lobby and several rooms in the clinic.
Did Planned Parenthood order artwork for the ceilings of procedure rooms, so aborting mothers might distract themselves from the reality of what they were doing? If so, it went without saying in the newsletter. But this particular Planned Parenthood goes to a lot of trouble to avoid any reference to the A-word. Note the following promo by Planned Parenthood of Greater Memphis makes no mention of the procedure by which it slaughters babies:

Interesting factoid: Planned Parenthood’s art budget was $25,000, the approximate value of 50 murdered children.
Planned Parenthood is conducting art tours, how lovely. Contact info in the newsletter.
Other artists who sold work to Planned Parenthood’s Lipstick on a Pig Project included Nathan Black, Alisa Botto, Jenn Brandt, Traci Brothers-McDaniel, Sean Davis, Maria Ferguson, Ron Fondaw, Matt Ivey, Chip Pankey, April Pierce, Jack Robinson Archive, and Monty Shane. Give them a hand – Planned Parenthood should have several.
Hey, didn’t Hitler collect art? Why yes, he did, what a coincidence.

I was immediately reminded of this and wonder if it’s the same facility:
“At the end of my time [at Planned Parenthood], I had tried to suggest things that would, by their terms, reduce the number of unintended pregnancies (therefore reducing the number of abortions). That’s what we said our goal was, right? But when I suggested that we give reminder calls for birth control injections, pill refills, etc, it was quickly shot down. They said that would be “too costly in staff time.” That was too costly, but they had no problem spending $20,000 on wall art? It became very easy to see their priorities, and it was not on women’s health.”

Looks to me like PP is trying to rehabilitate their image after Gosnell decorated his “clinic” with cat feces, bloody couches and baby parts in the fridge next to the baloney sandwiches.
Good point, Kelsey. They are always pleading poverty, where do they get the money to spend on art?
I agree with DocKimble (welcome, btw!) — Planned Parenthood is aware that abortion clinics have earned the reputation of back-alley trash.
PP means to look like a real medical clinic. They are trying to restore their reputation.
Frankly, an investment in some quality artwork is long overdue.
And for PP’s own sake, I hope you cherry-picked the ugliest pieces for this blog post. “Bliss” looks like she is crying — not the best image to confront while waiting for (or recovering from) an abortion.
My dentist has more interesting and beautiful works on her walls.

This has caused me to reflect on Pope Benedict’s message, urging us to evangelize to the world with art and beauty. Beauty is intimately twined with goodness and truth — what sort of “beauty” could an artist make for a commissioned work for Planned Parenthood?
I know ‘art’ varies in it’s interpretation, but that top picture entitled ‘bliss’ looks more like a woman weeping over a heroine addiction (very hypodermic looking in the foreground there) than any form of ‘bliss’ I’ve ever seen.
Ironic that many of the artists whose paintings they use to ‘decorate’ PP are black…the very race PP was set up to ‘exterminate’ in the FIRST place.
What, no pics of babies or children? I wonder why . . .
This is beautiful art, honoring women for their particular gift of womanhood:
