Noted Politico’s Ben Smith

Abortion hasn’t been the center of the mainstream debate on health care, but it’s the source of a lot of heat.
A central issue: A vast expansion of government subsidies for low- and moderate-income Americans means that some women with subsidized plans will get abortions on them….
[I]t’s a powerful sidelight to the debate, and this ad the anti-abortion Susan B. Anthony List is running in NV shows one way it’ll play.

JLS note: Smith wrote that before Obama gave his speech last night.
Pro-lifers today are rightfully up in arms about Obama’s persistence in peddling the myth that abortion isn’t in healthcare.
But pro-lifers should also pause to give themselves a little well-deserved credit that Obama mentioned abortion last night at all. I didn’t expect it. The fact that Obama had to discuss the distasteful topic of abortion in healthcare as part of a speech before a joint session of Congress on prime time national television means we have forced abortion into “the center of the mainstream debate,” contrary to Smith’s opinion.
