Abortion contributing to Chicago’s “fiscal free fall” and Rahm’s collapse

Rahm Emanuel

From the Investors.com article, “Rahm Emanuel’s Chicago nears fiscal free fall,” March 2:

In progressive ChicagoMoody’s has cut its credit rating to two grades above “junk.”…

The steady financial decline of the nation’s third-largest city prompted us recently to say that Chicago was well on its way to becoming the next Detroit….

[P]rospects aren’t good, as people – particularly high-income individuals and businesses – flee the city’s high taxes and stiff regulations….

People are leaving in droves, voting the only way they can in a one-party town – with their feet.

From 2000 to 2009, Chicago’s population shrank by 200,000 – the only one of the nation’s 15 largest cities to lose people. The city now has 145,000 fewer school-age children than it had more than a decade ago, according to district data, forcing the closure of about 100 schools since 2001.

Those school closures are playing a part in the embarrassing run-off election Mayor Rahm Emanuel, President Obama’s former chief-of-staff, is facing, and which he may lose:

Emanuel recently emerged from the Windy City’s mayoral primary with just 45% of the vote against four opponents, forcing Chicago’s first-ever mayoral runoff. A poll taken.. Feb. 28 showed Emanuel leading second-place primary finisher Jesus “Chuy” Garcia by a slim 42.9% to 38.5% margin.

About those school closures, from the New York Times, yesterday:

The sky-blue paint has begun to peel on the three-story building that was once Anthony Overton Elementary [pictured below]. Window air-conditioners are speckled with rust. Doors where children used to rush in and out are sealed with plywood.

04CHICAGOweb1-articleLarge

The empty shell of this school on Chicago’s largely black South Side stands as a reminder of one of Rahm Emanuel’s defining acts as mayor: overseeing the closing of nearly 50 public schools deemed underperforming, underutilized or both. It was the largest closing of schools in memory, with many of them in black or Latino neighborhoods….

“It hurts,” said Earvin Wade, 55, who lives across the street. “You used to have a lot of kids there, families around. It was at the heart of our neighborhood. Now it’s nothing but an eyesore.”…

[I]n the end, it may be the education agenda that [Emanuel] proudly, defiantly and swiftly carried out that threatens his political future.

Population shrinkage and closing schools may in part be blamed on people “flee[ing] the city,” but an equally obvious reason for the decline is abortion.

Between 1995 and 2013, the dates for which Illinois county abortion breakdowns are available, a staggering 486,743 children were aborted in Cook County, accounting for 55.8% of the 872,631 abortions committed in Illinois during those 19 years.

Those are just the past two decades, with the two decades of legalized abortion before that likely the same.

The children aborted in 1973 would have been having their own children during the 1990s, so the number of lost people is compounded beyond what we see.

It is tragic that black and Hispanic neighborhoods in Chicago are blighted by empty schools. But the people themselves killed off the students. Blacks and Hispanics have a much higher rate of abortion than whites. According to Guttmacher, five times as many blacks as whites get abortions, and two times as many Hispanics as whites.

And abortion is just one social ill contributing to Chicago’s demise.

“In Chicago, 51% of children live in single-parent homes,” notes the Chicago Tribune.

Had Democrats in charge of the city since 1931 embraced conservative social values and encouraged premarital abstinence and stronger two-parent married families, the children allowed to live would not be “underperforming” in school to the extent that they are, along with being the victims of other societal plagues.

Such as murder, which unstable homes contribute to. Quoting Pew Research:

In terms of raw number of murders, Chicago has long been at or near the top of U.S. cities, according to FBI crime statistics. In 2012, it had 500 murders, the most of any city in the country; Chicago has been among the top three cities with the most murders since 1985.

Will the people wake up? But politicians aren’t the answer. They’re part of the problem.

Churches with their theological act together are really Chicago’s only hope.

BREAKING: Louisiana legislature passes Texas-style pro-life mega-bill

Katrina Jackson HB388 pro-life billThe Louisiana House voted this afternoon 88-5 to join the Senate in passing a pro-life omnibus bill, which Governor Bobby Jindal promoted and has already promised to sign.

But unlike Texas, there was no pink tennis-shoed legislator trying to hold up the process. HB388 received bipartisan support, even sponsored by a Democrat – Rep. Katrina Jackson, pictured left.

Depending on the source, the enacted measure is anticipated to close either three or four of the state’s five abortion clinics. Good riddance. Quoting nola.com:

While it’s been widely reported that the new measures could shutter three clinics in Baton Rouge, Metairie and New Orleans, the clinic in Bossier City still as [sic] to work to comply.

imgresThe Delta Clinic in Baton Rouge is being hit with a double whammy. Only yesterday U.S. Senator David Vitter, pictured right, asked the Louisiana Dept. of Health and Hospitals to investigate it for HIPAA violations. DHH has already referred the matter to the FBI.

Like so many others, Delta Clinic has a sordid legal history, including a link to abortionist serial-killer Kermit Gosnell.

HB388 is quite a piece of legislation. It mandates that:

  • abortionists must have completed a residency program in either ob/gyn or family medicine
  • abortionists have admitting privileges at a hospital no more than 30 miles away
  • a 24-hour waiting period before RU-486 is administered, just as is present Louisiana law for surgical abortions
  • abortionists be in the room when a pregnant mother is given RU-486
  • abortionists report all medical or surgical abortion complications to the state and FDA if medical
  • clinics provide a 24-hour answering service with medical records at hand in case of emergencies
  • clinics provide written notice if employees have abortion sales quotas

The new law is certain to be challenged in court.

The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals will eventually hear the case. While one 5th Circuit panel upheld Texas’s law and allowed abortion clinics to close immediately, a different 5th Circuit panel is allowing Mississippi’s lone abortion clinic to remain open while that case is pending.

I read an interesting quote yesterday by NARAL’s Vice President of Policy, Donna Crane. Attempting to “reassure supporters,” according to the Huffington Post, she said, “[A]lthough these (restrictive state laws) keep happening and we are losing ground, we’ve not lost power.”

By what measure?

Pro-lifers are riding a great wave in the states at present. Kudos to the many pro-life legislators around the country enacting laws to protect women and babies.

Photos: Kermit Gosnell’s clinic today

Gosnell clinic - inside front door trashI expect many pro-lifers are being drawn to pray at serial killer Kermit Gosnell’s abortion clinic if in the Philadelphia area, as my husband and I were over the weekend.

It is a macabre, ghostly place. Shocking to me was the clinic appears from the outside to have been left virtually untouched since the FBI raided it on February 18, 2010, over four years ago.

Also shocking was that life appears to go on unchanged around the building. 20140518_150655

As I stood there, cars whizzed by and people strolled past chatting and laughing.

I don’t know what I expected, but I found it surreal that 3801 Lancaster isn’t being respected and protected more as a grim historical site, where the most prolific serial killer in U.S. history committed his crimes.

Tens of thousands of babies were murdered by abortion inside those walls over the course of four decades – an untold number after delivery by having their spinal cords “snipped.”

But there is no yellow tape marking the building as a horrific crime scene, or a sign denoting it as the final resting place of so many victims, whose bodies were ground up in a garbage disposal.

In a sane world plans would already be underway to denote this place as a grim national landmark – although I realize the world is insane. It would also be an apt site for an abortion holocaust museum.

I had trouble settling down to pray. My spirit was greatly disturbed. The place felt quietly demonic, as if the killing might have stopped, but evil spirits still lurked about.

But at the same time it felt like a shrine, with thousands of angelic spirits there as well, quietly demanding justice.

The experience was probably similar to visiting the Jewish death camps, I suppose.

  • Abstinence Clearinghouse discusses research which states that STDs and ectopic pregnancies are linked:

According to ehealthmd.com, the connection between STD’s and Ectopic Pregnancies is attributed to the damage caused to the fallopian tubes. Severe infections can scar the tubes, causing them to become blocked. Women who have previously suffered from infections, such as chlamydia and gonorrhea, have a five times greater risk of developing an ectopic pregnancy….

Pro-abortion terrorist sentenced to 41 months in prison

Read backstory here.

Theodore Shulman not only threatened to kill several pro-life leaders, he was found in possession of “cyanide and two other deadly substances” when apprehended by the FBI in May 2010. Shulman liked to refer to himself as the “first pro-choice terrorist.”

Shulman faced up to 51 months in prison and a fine of $250,000. An October 3 press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, District of New York, indicates Shulman ended up getting sentenced to 41 months in prison, three years supervised release, and a $100 fine.

Odd that there still are no pictures. Imagine if the situation were reversed.

There has also barely a news blip on Shulman since his arrest. Again, were the situation reversed. One of the few news outlets reporting on the sentence had an interesting headline. I expect The Global Dispatch will fix it shortly. Freudian slip, I suppose…

Shulman was apprehended for threatening two pro-life leaders, Professor Robert George of  Princeton and Father Frank Pavone of Priests for Life.

But Shulman also threatened others, including this site’s moderator Dr. Gerard Nadal, Operation Rescue’s Cheryl Sullenger and Troy Newman, Stand True’s Bryan Kemper, Live Action’s Lila Rose, and me. From PoliticsDaily.com in 2011:

In assisting the FBI over the past few years, Jill Stanek compiled more than 4,000 comments that Shulman posted or tried to post on her site over the last four years or so. One example: “I’m looking forward to watching a documentary entitled ‘The Assassination of Jill Stanek’,” Shulman wrote on Oct. 27 in a comment using one of his many online aliases.

Shulman also harassed Carla, Kelli, and several of you commenters. I appreciate how everyone stayed strong and also how the moderators and Kel helped compile information to give to the FBI.

Memo to FBI: Back away from pro-lifers

News about the visit the FBI paid to son-in-law Andy Moore is getting around – as far as New Zealand.

Today Andy’s attorneys, the Life Legal Defense Foundation, sent a letter to the FBI accusing it and President Obama’s Department of Justice of attempting to intimidate pro-life activists around the country:

Moreover, the government is on notice that the collusion between government agents and abortion clinic providers has been brought to light. The concerted efforts to systematically violate the free speech rights of these pro-life advocates, via fabricated FACE cases, will not be tolerated by our federal court system. We are aware of the stern warning issued by Judge Ryskamp in the U.S. v. Pine (10-CV-80971) matter that the government’s baseless FACE allegations unjustifiably burden a person’s First Amendment rights. Any further action taken by your agency to interfere with my client’s constitutionally protected free speech activities will be met with immediate legal action against the government in U.S. District Court.

Further evidence of the conspiracy between the government and the abortion business was made public when LLDF learned that the FBI set up a training program for police officers who are called to respond to conflicts between abortion businesses and pro-life demonstrators. Even more, the very training manual for the FBI event was written by Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation. To make matters worse your agency has listed pro-life activists as domestic terrorists simply because of their viewpoint on abortion.

LLDF sent a copy of its letter to the U.S. House Oversight Committee. As the letter states, the Obama administration is engaging in “McCarthy era surveillance and scrutiny of people because of their supposedly differing ideologies.”

This has become so obvious a Congressional investigation is in order.

Obama administration’s harassment of pro-lifers gets personal

On July 13 FBI agents Conrad Rodriguez and William Sivley paid a visit to my son-in-law, Andy Moore, at his home.

Andy is a pro-life activist who prays and protests outside the Southwestern Women’s Surgery Center abortion mill in Dallas, where late-term abortionist Curtis Boyd freely acknowledges he “kill[s]” children.

Agents Rodriguez and Sivley told Andy three red flags prompted their visit:

  1. His use of a megaphone outside the mill, a one-time event on March 31, which he stopped and never repeated after police told him he was violating a noise ordinance.
  2. A complaint by the clinic manager that Andy trespassed, which he did not. There was no evidence, yet police gave Andy a warning: “I asked the officer multiple times, ‘Why are you giving me this warning, as I did not trespass?’ All he would tell me was, ‘I’m giving you this warning.’ He did not answer my question.”
  3. Unsubstantiated complaints that Andy may be too aggressive. “One of the agents told me it is acceptable to be aggressive, however there is a line. He gave examples of things which would cross the line, such as making threats of violence, or obstructing vehicle access – violations of the FACE act. I told him in no uncertain terms that I had never done anything like this and had not considered anything like this either.”

Obviously, the charges rose to the level of nada to begin with, certainly not above local law enforcement’s pay grade. Thankfully, Andy videotaped his one and only foray into megaphoning, which was clearly tame and polite:

But the FBI used these as an excuse to knock on the door, nerve-wracking to begin with, and followed by asking totally inappropriate questions clearly aimed at intimidating Andy, while also launching into a  fishing expedition about me. Per Andy and my daughter, who was home at the time,  here were questions the agents asked:

  • What affiliations do you have including church groups?
  • How long have you known your wife?
  • What belief system makes you believe in your cause?
  • What is your goal in protesting?
  • Do you know why people would make complaints against you?
  • Are there friends of yours or people you’re connected with that you could confidentially tell us are aggressive or abrasive? “Don’t be afraid to tell us.”
  • Are you involved in activism in Austin, since we noticed some entries on abortionwiki?
  • They were REALLY interested in the connection to Jill Stanek – details of internship, New Zealand speaking tour visit, did you get your activist and pro-life ideas from her? Did she train or teach you? Did you meet Jill before or after you became involved in the movement? Was it Jill who “fired you up” to become so active in the movement?
  • They were overly nice saying he wasn’t in trouble and feel free to tell us anything. Encouraged him to keep going back out there, that they represent both sides. ++they are protecting his freedom of speech++ is what they kept saying.
  • They said their task force that deals with these abortion cases also handles Hate Crimes and White Supremacy. Odd grouping with pro-lifers.
  • They knew he was an immigrant.  They said a felony on his record could/would get him deported. “You wouldn’t want to be apart from your wife and newborn.”

Life Legal Defense Fund, one of the pro-life legal firms that has successfully defended pro-lifers against prosecution by Obama’s Department of Justice, has now taken Andy under its wing. Senior Staff Counsel, Allison Aranda, shared her insights in an email:

The Obama administration is essentially engaging in a witch hunt.  From the moment the new administration took office, the DOJ has been targeting peaceful pro-life sidewalk counselors.  They have come out guns blazing on several occasions often bringing allegations that could later not be substantiated or in some cases clearly proven to be false.  Their weapon of choice – the FACE act.  The DOJ is using tactics that amount to legal extortion.  They have filed these frivolous claims against innocent people who don’t have the finances to hire big shot attorneys.  The DOJ then kindly offers to settle the case if the counselor simply agrees to stay so many yards away and pay a couple thousand dollar fine.

Pro-bono legal foundations like LLDF, Alliance Defending Freedom, and Liberty Counsel have taken a stand to defend these innocent pro-lifers.  Thankfully the sidewalk counselors have either had witnesses or video evidence to defend their actions.  The DOJ has outright dismissed charges in two cases, walking away with egg on their face.  In one case, a federal court judge issued a scathing opinion questioning the motives of the DOJ for bringing such unsubstantiated charges in the first place.  The judge suggested that there might have been a conspiracy between the government and the abortion clinic to violate the free speech rights of the pro-life advocates.

It now seems that the unscrupulous Eric Holder is at it again.  This time when the government determined that the evidence wasn’t quite what they thought it would be to proceed on a FACE claim against Andy, they turned their intimidating interrogation into a fishing expedition about the personal life of Jill Stanek.  Targeted bullying by our government because of an individual’s viewpoint and willingness to share that message in the public square is intolerable.  LLDF is committed to aggressively defending the rights of pro-life advocates.  We will not back down, and we will not be threatened.  We will continue to fight so that the freedoms of all are protected and preserved.

It stands to reason that the Obama administration would be interested in me.  This has probably been a long time coming.  But to reiterate Allison’s point, we will not back down, and we will not be threatened.

Pro-life leader’s home vandalized in wake of Newsweek article

Warning: Vulgarity ahead.

I wrote last week that a Newsweek article favorable to the personhood movement and personhood leaders Keith and Jennifer Mason had “riled abortion proponents.” Little did I know how much.

Someone posted Mason’s home address in a comment to the Newsweek article. Newsweek closed down comments, but it was too late. At 1:30a on June 27, Mason “was in the basement, catching a movie and having a beer, to just chill,” according to a follow-up Newsweek piece, when he heard a loud noise:

“[I] thought one of our kids had fallen down the stairs.” Mason says he ran upstairs from the basement, then “ran through a bunch of glass” and “saw red.” He describes the scene as “surreal – I didn’t know if it was blood on the glass or what. It turned out to be spray paint. There was red paint all over the side of our house. They spray-painted coat-hangers all over my sidewalk and door. We called 911. The police were there within three minutes.”

Mason and his family immediately left their home and are now staying at an undisclosed location. Mason didn’t go public with the attack until July 2, after he had ensured the safety of his family.

Now, according to Mason in an email to me, he has “hired security, been forced to move, and are getting further daily threats.” And not a lot of sympathy. A sample of both in the (now closed) comments section of the follow-up Newsweek post:

Whether this is deemed a terrorist attack or hate crime will be up to the FBI, which is now involved.
