Stanek weekend question: Should Republicans stop talking about rape?

kellyanne-conwayConservativepollster Kellyanne Conway had sharp advice for Republicans when she spoke at their retreat on January 16. According to Politico:

It’s way past time: House Republicans need to stop talking about rape….

Conway said rape is a “four-letter word,” and Republicans simply need to stop talking about it in their races for office.

Stanek weekend question: Do you agree the “safe, legal, and rare” mantra backfired?

1101130114_600There has been no shortage of pro-abortion response to Time’s January 14 cover story, “What choice?”, which made the case abortion proponents have been losing the war ever since they thought they won the war in the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision.

The article’s author, Kate Pickert, listed a variety of reasons: a plethora of pro-life laws passed in the states, public sentiment, science, stigma, aging abortionists, and generational in-fighting.

The latter point was proven by a spate of commentary by pro-abortion Millennials defending themselves while attacking their “legacy” leaders.

Aside from that, I was surprised there hasn’t been much push back.

katie-stack-e1317916130102The latest Millennial to take a shot at her aging forebearers, pardon the pun, is Katie Stack, who was featured in MTV’s 2010 abortion special, “No Easy Decision,” about young mothers who decided to kill their preborn babies.

To her credit, Stack conceded many of Pickert’s points, although Stack always circled back to blame the “legacy” movement.

Here’s a thought I found particularly interesting, quoting Stack from AmplifyYourVoice.org:

Stanek weekend question: At what age should children be told about abortion?

I received this question from reader Rebecca: I’d like to ask if you could have a weekend question about at what age children are ready to know about abortion. I know this depends on the child but it would be interesting to hear from other parents when and how they told their children about abortion […]

Obama: “Can we honestly say we’re doing enough to keep our children, all of them, safe from harm?”

I have been praying that the tragic Newtown, Connecticut, massacre will soften President Obama’s heart on the sanctity of preborn children, who are just as valuable as postborn children.

As I wrote in my weekend question, there are many reasons for the obvious breakdown of our culture, but one of them has to be abortion. When our society as a whole is groomed to condone the murder of preborn children, it is no stretch to say the value of postborn children decreases as well. It is only common sense.

If President Obama gave his speech at the Newton memorial service yesterday without one thought of abortion, he is morally depraved beyond comprehension. Excerpts:

Stanek wkend questions: Why the surge in violence? How do we stop it?

If you’re like me, you can’t dwell too long on the massacre of 20 school children yesterday (and six adults) at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

As psychiatrist Dr. Keith Ablow of Fox News wrote, “Adam Lanza opened the door to a new kind of horror in America – the massacre of children.”

That’s not true, but I know what he was trying to say.

Stanek wkend question: What is the goal of the anti-abortion movement?

This is a follow-up to last weekend’s question, which was, “Is abortion the problem?”

This weekend’s question is: What is the goal of the anti-abortion movement? What should be our goal?

(I singled out “anti-abortion” from “pro-life,” since the problems and goals of the movement at large are broader.)

Our Quote of the Day today adds real insight:

In every society, there are two critical lists: acceptable conditions for having a baby, and acceptable conditions for having sex. From time immemorial, the one thing that almost every society had in common was that their two lists matched up.

It was only with the widespread acceptance of contraception in the middle of the 20th century, creating an upheaval in the public psyche in which sex and babies no longer went hand-in-hand, that the two lists began to diverge. And now, in 21st-century America, they look something like this:

Stanek weekend question: Is abortion the problem?

When attending a pro-life conference several years ago I spotted an epiphanal poster, published by One More Soul. It helped me on my journey to understand that contraception is a root of abortion. Here’s the first half. Click to enlarge…

After all, contraception literally means “anti-conceive.” Behind the use of any mechanical methods to stop conception is an anti-baby mindset.

So it’s probably obvious that the use of contraception isn’t the root of abortion either. It starts with a mind hostile to the prospect of conceiving offspring.

And what is the root of that? I’ll write my own answer to that question as a comment on Sunday.

Here’s the other half of that poster, btw….

What pro-life gains are you thankful for this Thanksgiving?

Happy Thanksgiving!

In total, Rich and I will celebrate the holiday three times by Saturday!

Last weekend we combined business with pleasure, flying to Dallas to tape an episode of Life Dynamics’ Life Talk (more on that later) and then celebrating an early Thanksgiving with daughter Daena, son-in-law Andy, and baby Levi.

Our time together was made even more special because Andy’s parents Peter and Michelle were also there, having flown to the U.S. on November 13. You will recall Andy is from New Zealand, and his mom and dad had never met Daena or their first grandson. So we all spent a lovely weekend bonding and ewwing and ahhing over baby. Here’s a photo of us after church…
