Likewise, MSM has been mesmerized by Barack Obama’s lies on the Born Alive issue.
Ready example. Yesterday Sarah Palin continued pounding Obama on his Born Alive vote, coming closer than ever to saying he endorsed letting little preborn babies like Trig die in hospital soiled utility rooms only because they were abortion survivors.
Yet, MSM simply repeated Obama’s lie about his vote again. MSM has yet to investigate. From the Associated Press, yesterday…
Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin attacked Barack Obama on abortion on Saturday, saying the Democratic presidential candidate has “left behind even the middle ground on the issue of life.”
Palin said she and Republican presidential candidate John McCain would be “defenders of the culture of life.” She opposes abortion in all cases except where the pregnancy threatens the woman’s life.
Alaska’s governor also touched upon common campaign themes during her speech to about 5,000 supporters in Johnstown, [PA] but she focused on children with special needs and then abortion. Palin, whose infant son, Trig, has Down syndrome, said she and McCain would make protecting such children a priority.
“Every child has something to contribute … if we give them that chance,” she said.
Palin said it was about time that Obama was “called” on his abortion views.
“Please, it is not negative and it’s not mean-spirited to talk about his record,” she said.
In the IL Senate, Obama opposed legislative efforts in 2001, 2002 and 2003 to give legal protections to any aborted fetus that showed signs of life. The 2003 measure was virtually identical to a bill President Bush signed into law in 2002 that unanimously passed the U.S. Senate.
Obama and others who opposed the IL bill said the state already had a law to protect aborted fetuses born alive and considered able to survive. They contended that the proposed legislation would have undermined abortion rights in ways that the federal law would not.
Palin called Obama’s ideas and votes on abortion “radical.”
“In short, Sen. Obama is a politician who has long since left behind even the middle ground on the issue of life. He’s fighting with those who won’t protect a child born alive,” she said.
“A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for activist courts that will continue to smother the open and democratic debate that we deserve and that we need on this issue of life – that’s OK, that debate – at both the state and federal level,” she said….
At least the AP mentioned Obama opposed the identical bill passed unanimously in the U.S. Senate. That’s progress.
But…why Obama opposed Born Alive at the time is so well-documented – and absolutely not what he is claiming today – that MSM’s repetition of his lie without checking the facts is astounding.
Obama was the only state senator to speak against Born Alive in the senate floor. There are pages and pages of documentation of his speeches. MSM, go to pages 84-90 here to read Obama’s actual rationale, from the IL General Assembly archives, for opposing Born Alive in 2001.
Obama, at the time, did not argue there was already another law in place (which is at any rate false; read this). He did not argue that the state version would bear consequences to Roe v. Wade that the federal version did not. He argued against the constitutionality of Born Alive. He argued simply against declaring abortion survivors legal persons.
One final point: An abortion survivor is not an “aborted fetus that showed signs of life.” An abortion survivor is a baby, neonate, infant, or child — take your pick. But according to all medical and general dictionaries, s/he is no longer a “fetus.”
