Sotomayor opening features shout-out from pro-lifer
UPDATE, 11:50a: Great post by Wendy Long at National Review Online, “Partial-Birth Abortion questions for Sotomayor,” since Sotomayor played a part in the 2004 case during the federal appeal sprocess.

UPDATE 11:33a: If Sotomayor’s confirmation is almost guaranteed, why debate?
Well, first there is this possibility, a quote by the Third Branch Conference’s Manny Miranda in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, July 11…
That’s right, she could Bork herself….
Because her personality is different than (Samuel) Alito’s, (Chief Justice John) Roberts’, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Sandra Day O’Connor, David Souter. Her personality could be more similar to Robert Bork, who basically Borked himself because of his demeanor and the way he approached the intellectual feast that was his hearing.
And so she might have that same problem. … She has what I recognize as the Hispanic gene, which is the desire in an argument to get the last word.
But that’s not likely. So this becomes as important. From the National Journal, July 11…
Tom Goldstein, a Supreme Court litigator… said. “How she is characterized will be absolutely relevant to the public’s perception of the president.”
And from the Washington Post, the hope:
Republican questions will be aimed primarily at Sotomayor. But the hearings may also be used to debate Obama’s intention for reshaping a court that may well see more vacancies during his tenure.

UPDATE, 11a: All opening statements at Los Angeles Times blog. Lindsay Graham is so frustrating. What a wimp. Appears to be the Gang of 1 traitor this go-around.

Watch C-SPAN for opening statements on the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.
Waiting to see video but here is a report from The Washington Times several minutes ago:
The start of the Capitol Hill hearing began with Mr. Leahy saying the proceeding will be the most open and transparent in history.
The hearing was briefly interrupted by somebody who shouted inside the Hart Senate Office Building room.
“Senator, what about the rights of the unborn,” shouted a middle-aged white male.
The person was swiftly removed by police as Mr. Leahy admonished the person and others who might try a similar effort.
FYI, Michelle Malkin and SBAList are live tweeting.

“The hearing was briefly interrupted by somebody who shouted inside the Hart Senate Office Building room.

Argh. I really wish people wouldn’t do things like that. Time and place for everything. Shouting people down creates chaos and anarchy, making those who are the loudest and have the numbers in power.
“What about the rights of the Jews?!?!” would have been a great thing to shout at anytime to the Nazi’s 70 years ago. When did we forget that we are talking about Genocide on the order of 50 million kids dead here?
I agree with the shouter:
What about the rights of the unborn?
I agree with Bobby. Shouting out like that just plays into the ‘pro-abort’s’ hands. They say ‘See? THOSE people (pro-lifers) can’t even control themselves! That’s the way they shout at women going into the clinics’. It just makes us (pro-lifers) look bad.
Why do they have to make sure they include that the person shouting was a “middle-aged white male?”
Hmmm… good question, Brendan.
I wouldn’t recommend that. But this ordeal is framed to be about race and that noise was not about race. And what race are people born in the Bronx?
She has what I recognize as the Hispanic gene, which is the desire in an argument to get the last word.
Oh, racism. Way to keep it classy, guys.

Reality,
And just who might you be when you are at home, where you actually have some legitmate authority.
Or did someone deputize you and make you the ‘speech’ sheriff while we weren’t lookin?
That is about as racist as saying an Italian could not talk if her/his hands were tied.
They held an “ebonics” spelling be in the Orange County Independent School District in southern California.
The winner: Ok Sun Song!
“I would hope that a wise German male with the richness of his experiences would more often than not reach
a better conclusion
than a Puerto Rican woman (like Sonia Sotomayor) who hasn’t lived that life.”
Now that is both racist and sexist, I plead quilty. Write me a citation. But only if you charge ms Sotomayor with the same crime.

I think that sometimes we just try to get “too civilized”. Shouting at a politician is a long and historicly honorable tradition.
Let’s don’t get overly polite here, while four thousand babies are being slaughtered every day. When someone shows a little emotion, let’s try not to pile on them, okay?
Reality,
Take note of the name of the guy to whom the quote was attributed: ‘Manny Miranda’.
He/she could be Latino/latina or Italiano/Italiana.
It is entirely possible that Miranda is latino/latina and discriminates against latinos/latinas.
You only have to go to the Mexico/America border and observe the disparate treatment the Mexican-American Latino/Latina border guards mete out to non American Latinos/Latinas.
It is blatant even when their victims are naturalized American citizens or documented aliens who are in this country legally.
It really iritates me, but confronting one of bullies would be like turning yourself in to the IRS or insulting the judge before he/she was about to sentence you to jail.

Doyle,
I completely agree.
John the Baptist used to shout at people and even insulted the leader of his country.
Reality,
Manuel ‘Manny’ Miranda is a latino, but he is a ‘conservative’ so in the eyes of the latino left he is a ‘Tio Tomas’/’Uncle Tom’.
Just because you have a Spanish sir name and speak spanish does not make you an ‘authentic’ latino.
You have to be ‘liberal’ to qualify.
It is a good thing that Sotomayor is a ‘liberal’ or she would become a political piñata for the left and the democrat feministas would be bludgeoning her with an inquisitional fervor.
Whatever wisdom the conservative feminista latina might possess would evaporate in the political heat of the ‘star chamber’.
It also works to her benefit that she: ¡No es una chica bonita y no es mui caliente! Pero es feminista autentica. No es conservativa, pero es mui liberal. matadora de bebes!

Hi Ken,
Good point. Just as Clarence Thomas was not a “real” black according to the liberal left. I actually read that in a news magazine.
After all, since all black people think exactly alike, or at least should know enough to tow the liberal line, any black person who dares stray from the liberal plantation can’t be “real”.
Do these liberals ever realize just how racist and patronizing they really are?
Doyle @ 5:40PM,
I agree. This generation needs to know the truth about Norma McCorvey. She is one strong woman. How awesome would it be if she were able to see the overturn of Roe in her lifetime. Kudos, and God bless you, Norma.
