Upton wins, Pitts wins
Read my previous posts here, here, and here.
The GOP Steering Committee voted for chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee tonight, and the bad new is pro-abort Fred Upton won. The good news is Upton promptly appointed Joe Pitts as the Health Subcommittee chairman.
Upton has been as liberal as they come on the life issue, but he is saying all the right things now. Perhaps he has had a change of heart. Or perhaps he read the conservative political tea leaves around him in the House and in his home state of Michigan. Whatever, according to Politico:
“I look forward to standing shoulder to shoulder with Speaker Boehner, Leader Cantor, Whip McCarthy and the entire republican conference as we repeal Obamacare….” Upton said in a statement.
Upton has already made his first major choice - picking Rep. Joe Pitts (R-PA) as chairman of the Health Subcommittee. “Together, we will protect the sanctity of life, ensuring early next Congress that no federal funds are used for abortion,” Upton said in a statement.
I’m also hopeful that since Speaker-elect Boehner went out on a limb for Upton - ignoring many conservative heavyweights, like Limbaugh and Beck - he will ensure Upton does not stray off the reservation on the life issue. According to Politico:
The MI Republican won the steering panel nod with critical support from Rep. John Boehner and a collection of senior and rank-and-file GOP lawmakers closely allied with the incoming House speaker.
Pro-life warhorse Congressman Pitts wrote in a statement:
We need to repeal Obamacare and replace it with something better. We need to protect human life from the unborn to the elderly….
We still await National Right to Life and Susan B. Anthony List’s 2nd “demand” were Upton elected E&C Committee chairman: that all open Republican spots on the committee be filled with pro-lifers.
I love this. The “pro-life” movement is a cheap date. You people talk a tough game about exercising political muscle, but you always fall in line and vote straight-ticket Republican every single election and once the GOP has used you they summarily dismiss you right to the back of the bus until the next election. After Obama’s embarrassing capitulation on upper-class tax breaks, I have resolved not to vote for him in 2012 unless he runs against someone really loathsome like Sarah Palin or Newt Gingrich (as opposed to merely somewhat loathsome, like every other Republican candidate). I won’t allow my vote to be taken for granted.
Jill, Is the site under maintenance? Lately when I scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Next’ it doesn’t change pages. Has anybody else noticed problem on the site lately or is the problem just with my PC?
Truthseeker. we’re always updating the site… :) One of the new features we’re working on is having a new page open when you click “Read the rest of this entry.” (Is that what you’re referring to by “Next”?) What do you think?
The ‘Read the rest of this entry’ link works fine and I like that. Go to http://www.jillstanek.com and hit the ‘end’ button on your keyboard. It takes you to the bottom of the page where there is a “NextPage” link. That is the one that is broken.
Yeah! You fixed it.
