Komen is erroneously sending women to Planned Parenthood for mammograms
Good sleuthing by John Jansen at Pro-Life Action League.
Still, I can’t believe what he found.
Inexcusably, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer foundation is telling people they can get mammograms at Planned Parenthood, which most certainly is not true.
The layers of incredulity here are many.
First, Planned Parenthood is the United States’ largest abortion provider, assuredly increasing the risk of breast cancer among its patients.
Second, pro-lifers have for years assailed SGK for giving grant money to Planned Parenthood – to screen for breast cancer in one room while causing it in the next.
Third, earlier this year it came to light that Planned Parenthood doesn’t even perform mammograms. It only refers for mammograms, which SGK recently admitted.
Now, John has found that SGK is actually referring women to Planned Parenthood for mammograms. What?
John began by emailing SGK in April:
SGK’s response…
Johns’ response…
SGK responded with a slightly modified letter, simply removing PP’s name – but adding 2 resources for low-cost mammograms. So why again is there a need for SGK to give PP grant moneyi? I just went to the FDA link and was provided a list of 10 healthcare facilities that perform mammograms in my area…
John had a feeling SGK did not change its form letter, so he wrote SGK again several weeks letter. And on June 8 he got basically the same original, misinformational email in response…

By appearance, SGK has something to gain by advertising the existence of PP.

Now lets look at the facts.
Neither of the communications identified above say that PP actually does mammograms themselves. They state “low-cost breast health services”.
These services include “in some areas, the only place that poor, uninsured or under-insured women can receive these services are through programs run by Planned Parenthood”
and
“local grants specifically to Planned Parenthood-sponsored programs in their communities to pay for breast cancer education and breast screenings.
When a mammogram is indicated, a patient is often referred to a local program, such as the state’s breast and cervical cancer program. In other cases, the Komen Affiliate’s grant to Planned Parenthood may include funds to pay for mammograms outright. When this happens, a local provider performs the mammogram, and is then reimbursed by Planned Parenthood using the Komen grant funds”
So PP is enabling the provision of mammograms.
And pro-life catholic ethicists don’t see an issue.
And again with the fundamentally discredited claim of an abortion/ breast cancer link.

The breast cancer/abortion myth was dispelled before. But, you hypocrites don’t care if corporations pollute the environment, causing breast cancer, do you?
I beg to differ on the part of the link between abortion and breast cancer:
http://www.abortionbreastcancer.com/press_releases/100106/index.htm
For years Chris Kahlenborn, M.D. has been researching abortion, contraception and breast cancer: http://www.lifeissues.net/writer.php?writerID=013
http://www.abortionbreastcancer.com/index.html
This link (August 2009) talks about how breast mature and how induced abortion increases risk of breast cancer: http://www.bcpinstitute.org/2009-Lanfranchi-LinacreQuarterly%5B1%5D.pdf
As to your comment about the environment, how do you know we don’t care about pollution? Have you talked to each and every person on here about that? Do you have the research to back up the fact that we don’t? You can’t know that for certain because you haven’t asked.
As to your second comment, is name-calling necessary to make your point? What does it prove? Do you have evidence to support your claim that pro-lifers are the name you called us? Can you provide sources to back up this claim?
I’ve learned in the abortion debate you best have resources to back up your claims or else you’re ignored or not given any credit. Jill Stanek has has welcomed discussion/debate on this blog, but I can tell you right here and now on BOTH sides people will demand evidence, proof, and resources. I’m not saying this to be rude, but to prepare you. I’ve seen it happen, that’s why I said what I did.
Have a good weekend and Happy Father’s Day.

Reality 7PM,
Where do women go for biopsies and cancer treatment should a mammogram diagnose a suspicious mass and this mass found to be cancerous?
You talk of PP being the only place these women can receive care but who takes care of them if they have cancer? Probably the same medical facilities and people who would have provided the breast cancer screening to begin with no help from PP.

I think I saw what link you’re referring to. And it put me in mind of something a priest told me in Confession/Spiritual Direction (I won’t go into the whole details, it’s rather long and involved). However, this does NOT mean that PP does mamograms and it also doesn’t mean that a pro-lifer has to be involved in it if they don’t want to.
