Stanek Sunday funnies 7-24-11
Following are my top 5 favorite political cartoons for the week.
Liberals and the abortion industry are salivating at the prospect of the Obama administration potentially forcing insurance companies to provide all FDA-approved contraceptives free of charge under Obamacare. Doing so would be a huge blow against the sanctity of human life, which I’ll get into more tomorrow. But in the meantime, a couple graphic satirists poked some fun at the topic, both liberals, interestingly. First up, Signe Wilkinson at GoComics.com…
And Joel Pett at GoComics.com…
Of course, the debate over the debt ceiling preoccupied our illustrative commentators. Steve Kelley at Townhall.com penned a couple good ones…
And closing with an astute one by Lisa Benson at Townhall.com…
Both the Steve Kelley ones today are hilarious. LOL

A balanced budget amendment would make it crystal clear that taxes need to be increased.
I think as part of it, anytime we go to war, tax increases should automatically kick in to pay for it. If they did that before Iraq/Afghanistan, we’d be in a nicer picture already.

NO RAISING TAXES. PAY EXTRA ON YOUR OWN FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO WANT TO RAISE TAXES.

The 47% who don’t pay can pony up. There’s no need to raise taxes. I’m tired of carrying those who sit at home all day doing nothing while I work.

That is impressive Texas Gal – in 1 minute you went from a no-taxation vote to raising taxes on 47% of the population!
Most of those folks pay sales tax – some property tax.
I’d put tax rates for the top tier or two back to the Reagan/Clinton days. The Bush tax rates are a failure and why we’re in this debt ceiling discussion.

Wow, TexasGal, way to show how completely uneducated you are about pretty much EVERYTHING.

Would it work if we all paid the exact same tax rate regardless of income – say 5% of our income – regardless of income “bracket”, and made it mandatory for employers to deduct this automatically and send it in? Then we could eliminate most of the IRS and eliminate having to file tax returns. Seems fair to me, but I don’t know enough about how that would work in real life in regards to the national budget so I wouldn’t necessarily think this “must” work, but it’s a thought. It would save the gov’t lots of money if we could drastically scale back the IRS and elimiate tax returns/refunds. It would also make things a lot more fair.
We’re not high-income people by any stretch of the imagination, and it would hurt not to get the tax refund at the end of the year. But we as a country need to do something. Wasteful spending in the gov’t is downright outrageous and out of control. We need to rein that in and get it paid off.
I showed my husband some of the cartoons above earlier today and he suggested withholding pay for all congresscritters and the Prez until the budget was straight (large cuts to porkbarrel programs please!). LOL it will never happen but I bet it would get things moving.

Rep. David Wu has been accused of an “unwanted sexual encounter” with the teenage daughter of a longtime friend, the latest scandal to engulf the troubled Oregon Democrat.

WASHINGTON — Three days before the Nov. 2 election, [democrat] U.S. Rep. David Wu’s most loyal and senior staffers were so alarmed by his erratic behavior that they demanded he enter a hospital for psychiatric treatment.
Last month, The Oregonian reported that at least a half-dozen members of Wu’s staff had resigned after he won re-election in November. That group included his longtime chief of staff and his spokeswoman. In addition, he lost his campaign pollster and his fundraiser.
As Election Day approached, the prevailing mood, according to one person, “was that the only thing worse than losing the campaign would be winning it.”

Your idea (a flat tax) really makes a lot of sense. A big problem now is that there are so many loopholes in the tax system now that you and I (I’m assuming you are middle class) pay a higher effective tax rate than a lot of rich people – Warren Buffet actually offered his billionaires club a million bucks if any of them could prove they paid a higher effective tax rate than their secretary.
So I don’t know what the number would be – 5%, 10% – but there is some validity.
Now, with that being said, I like components of the tax system that encourages people to have kids. In fact, if it were up to me, I’d raise taxes on the top tier or two and increase the child tax credit. I think right now, having kids is becoming a bit like home ownership – the price tag is making it very tough for people. What better way of being pro life than encouraging life and supporting life in this world.

Gee, Ex, you’re sounding… not so ex!
Most flat-tax plans say they must start around 17% at first, going down as the economy would no doubt sky-rocket.
This is why “progressive” tax rates don’t work: after the 19-20% line people work overtime at finding loopholes and tax shelters. It’s only natural. You can’t force generosity. But you can force defensiveness.

We’re probably more like lower-middle-class. We make barely over $50k a year (pretax), but in a year or two my husband will unfortunately be out of a job (and out of insurance as well) so we’ll probably be lower-class in a couple of years. Not sure how that will work out for us but God will help us figure out something.

Well, this is worth taking a look at
“Total cost of new policies under Bush: $5.07 trillion / Total cost of new policies under Obama: $1.44 trillion
The Chart That Should Accompany All Discussions of the Debt Ceiling: It’s this one, from yesterday’s New York Times… It’s based on data from the Congressional Budget Office and the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. Its significance is not partisan (who’s “to blame” for the deficit) but intellectual. It demonstrates the utter incoherence of being very concerned about a structural federal deficit but ruling out of consideration the policy that was largest single contributor to that deficit, namely the Bush-era tax cuts.”
It’s also worth noting that the debt ceiling was raised by $4 trillion under Bush without incident, and Speaker John Boehner, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell approved each of the five increases.”

What gets me derr is we’re in this mess because of a mix of tax decreases and spending increases…yet somehow, the only way anybody wants to get out of this mess is spending decreases without tax increases.
