Abortion horror film in production in Chile
This is very real situation that has happened many times on our country. Since 1989, a few months before the end of the Chilean dictatorship, it was stated that therapeutic abortion would be considered illegal, not even when the life of the mother is in danger.
The realism is very important on this film which is why the story is based on lives of many real people, and it also shows how politics and religion get involved on a subject like this. Yet the movie is not a drama, but a thriller that states how this is not only an attempt against human rights, but also a situation that always leads to a violent resolution.

Um…what?? I can’t even tell if this is supposed to be coming out against or in favor of abortions. Foreign films are weird. (And that included American films in foreign films, I’m sure our ‘foreign’ films seem just as strange. Seriously could anyone but an American make sense of Lethal Weapon or Ghost Rider? Both movies I like btw)

No way, dude, foreign films are among the best out there!

“Protection of the life of the mother as an excuse for an abortion is a smoke screen. In my 36 years of pediatric surgery I have never known of one instance where the child had to be aborted to save the mother’s life. If toward the end of the pregnancy complications arise that threaten the mother’s health, the doctor will either induce labor or perform a Caesarean section. His intention is to save the life of both the mother and the baby. The baby’s life is never willfully destroyed because the mother’s life is in danger.”

carla i will put it on my list ;)
Some basic questions:
1. What is a therapeutic abortion?
I understand what therapy is, but pregnancy is not a disease. If there was an in-utero fetal demise – no one is against that in terms of saving the life of the mother by removing the child.
2. Why frame this as religious?
The morality of abortion is a human issue, because the flesh and blood of the child is destroyed. While spiritual matters might be discussed when discussing “personhood”, the fact remains, human life begins at conception. Calling it a religious issue is irrelevant.
3. Why appeal to pity?
How does aborting a human child become morally permissible because people are going to do it anyway and suffer as a result? Bank robbers get hurt during the commission of their crimes – does that mean bank robbery should be made legal? it simply doesn’t follow.
4. Can we euthanize without consent?
The film appeals to mercy with regard to a child with a terminal disease – yet here we have a parental decision being made by the mother – I’ll be merciful to my child by killing him. I can see where in the middle of a particularly bad battle, a soldier might ask fellow soldiers to kill him to stop his suffering (and/or save him from potential torture from an overwhelming and sadistic enemy) but I can’t imagine such circumstances in normal life.
I’m guessing that Morales comes down on the side that abortion is a “human right” and is attempting to make a social appeal with his nasty genre. Imagine that – a horror director with a social conscience. Mr. Morales, you can’t come anywhere close to the real horror of abortion, no matter how bloody or gory your film might be. There are no words that convey the depth of revulsion, pain and suffering for this world-wide nightmare.
Chris, therapeutic abortion doesn’t necessarily refer to the mother’s health. It can, but usually “therapeutic” abortions are performed when the child has some sort of prenatal diagnosis, like Down’s Syndrome.

It is offensive to claim abortion is a “human right” and I am offended by people who do so. Abortion is a violation of human rights. Chile is quite right to prohibit it and I only wish our country would follow their example.
Hi Kate @ 11:47 - I’m pointing out the language mangling that often occurs with abortion. Therapy is usually a corrective process of medical necessity. I’m simply pointing out pregnancy is not a disease or malignancy, except in severe cases where the mother’s life is at imminent risk – then, morally, it falls under the principle of double effect. To put it simply – I’m rejecting the deliberate obfuscation that continually occurs when pro-choicers refer to abortion.
Apologies, Chris, didn’t realize what you were getting at. Sorry for jumping in.
I translated the article into English using Google Translate

“Francesc Morales shocked by the sign of his new film, “celery green”

The striking image of an attractive young woman, made up as a model, pregnant with his bloody clothes, lying in the middle of an agricultural field and with a thick stalk of celery, also stained with hemoglobin, is the provocative way in which the filmmaker of Catalan origin and living in Chile Francesc Morales hopes to shake consciences about their new film, “celery green”, with which it wants to report that the South American country is one of the few countries in which therapeutic abortion is legally prohibited irrespective of medical diagnosis. “The film is a” thriller “delves into the psychological consequences of this ban, which leads a woman to madness and a violent outcome. Part very dramatic and ends as terror,” the filmmaker told NOTICINE.com, which debuted with “Humanimal.”
The poster has just arrived in the newsroom and in more than one have refused to publish it, just as predictably occur at certain theaters. In the popular will the Chilean Catherine Mazoyer, lying on a bed of celery. Her legs look bloodied and in between them is a large stem. However, she is not sad or crying. The renowned photographer Paul Sepulveda Fierro is performed promotional image for “celery green” Morales filmed the tape a few weeks in order to release it, if allowed, next year. “The focus, he explains, in a woman who upon learning that her son will die at birth to live months of agony, which leads her to confront the problems he has avoided all his life. It is a” thriller “that focuses on psychological and the prohibition of therapeutic abortion in Chile is not only an attack on our human rights but also leads to violent situations that can drive anyone mad. ”
Participating in the project with Catherine Mazoyer, Cristian Gajardo (2011 Altazor nominated for his role in the play “The Quintrala”), Catalina Aguayo (“Birthday”), Andres Gomez (“No”), Teresita Reyes (“Machos” ), Carolina Paulsen, Sonia Mena, Jenny Cavallo, Pamela Leiva, Iñigo Urrutia and Gregory Cohen, among others.
Mazoyer (“Machuca”, “Sex with Love”, “40-something “…) not afraid to be involved in the controversy:” What got me the script is a “thriller”, which sets it apart from the typical way to address these issues. I feel like talking about this film without value judgments, as it refers to the pros and cons of the matter. We do hard criticism that we can not choose. This project is a great acting challenge has very emotional and other scenes of intense action. I took a lot of research since the characters are very complex. ”
The film, produced by Camille Klein, is filmed in the cities of Santiago and Valparaiso. In addition to travel this week to the business market Ventana Sur in Buenos Aires to achieve sales. Morales considers it “a very personal film that rescues and experiences of real people I met, besides my own story. This is the point that I began to write the recommendation of my psychologist. My first movie the started recording when I was 22 . It was very surreal and symbolic, and despite having been in several film festivals, left me with the need to touch deeper issues. In this case, we are making a socially important film, entertaining to watch, aesthetically interesting and performances you goose bumps. ”
On the technical side highlights the presence of cinematographer Alex Leyton, who came to Chile for working on this project. He had previously starred in movies like “The Cable Guy / Dr.Cable / The Unbearable” with Jim Carrey, and video clips of Madonna and U2.
Born in Barcelona, ??but formed in Chile, Morales worked as a screenwriter for the upcoming television series Chilevisón youth, “Gordis,” and next month will release an unusual webserie called “The Dictionary of Sex,” starring Nicolas Perez, Arantxa Bodenhofer, Martin Castle, Pamela Lewis, among others.”
What I got from the article is that the movie is about a pregnant woman who conducts an illegal, self-abortion on herself (using a celery stalk?) with it’s risks and without regrets, after she finds out the baby she’s carrying has a birth defect incompatible with life, because legal abortion was not available in cases of fetal abnormalities or endangerment to the woman’s health.
Thanks for the translation, Rachael. I just HATE that phrase “incompatible with life”! If that was true, a baby will die “on his/her own”….you don’t have to KILL him/her. If parents would just LOVE their babies, whether it’s for minutes, hours, days, weeks..whatever…just LOVE them while they’re here and cherish WHATEVER time they have with them, they wouldn’t have to worry about “regrets”.
No me gusta el hecho de que el aborto es considerado therapeutic en el primer lugar
I went on that actress’ facebook page (the one pictured in the poster). She’s mighty proud of her role in the film.
While the google translator names the film “Celery Green”, the actual interpretation would be “Green Celery”.
The whole thing is meant to be a shocker, given the horror medium and the pro-life status of Chile.
It’s gained plenty of attention, so don’t be surprised if it becomes the rallying film of pro-choicers come 2012.
