When even Chris Matthews opposes Obama’s contraceptive mandate, you know it’s in trouble
When even infamously liberal Catholic and Obama worshipper Chris “Thrill Up My Leg” Matthews has problems with the Obama administration’s mandate forcing religious institutions to cover contraception, abortifacients, and sterilization in their insurance policies, you know it’s in trouble.
“It gets to that interesting point to me, which is frightening, when the state tells the church what to do,” said Matthews February 7 on MSNBC’s Hardball…

The Obama administration counted on liberal Catholics supporting the mandate. Liberal Catholics may indeed think the Church should condone contraception, but they do not like the idea of the government telling the Church to condone contraception, as this new Rasmussen poll indicates.
Although the mainstream media tried to ignore the story, it has still ignited into a firestorm.
There’s a ton going on, but I want to focus on the main point, which is: This entire debate is not about the contraceptive mandate. It is about the First Amendment. This is about religious freedom.
To that end, Catholic University President John Garvey made a great point on Fox News February 6:
It shows an attitude on the government’s part that religion is something we’ll protect if it’s just happening in church on Sunday, or in the mosque on Friday, but if it has to do with your daily activity or the life you want to lead, it’s not something we want to protect.
In other words, by exempting churches from the contraceptive mandate but not church institutions, the Obama administration is forcing religious people to compartmentalize their beliefs. The administration is saying, “It’s fine with us (at this point) if you live out your faith in church on Sunday, but you must betray your faith in your daily life the other six days.”
When I was in D.C. for the March for Life, a U.S. senator in an off-the-record meeting said what offended him most about the mandate was that Obama gave religious institutions a year to comply. As Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, president of the USCCB, put it, “In effect, the president is saying we have a year to figure out how to violate our consciences.”
First they came for the Catholics
Again, this is NOT a Catholic issue. This is a constitutional issue about religious freedom. Evangelical leader Charles Colson has just posted a video stating the time may be upon us to engage in civil disobedience. When the U.S. Army censors an archbishop’s letter opposing the contraception mandate, this is becoming very serious very fast….

Dr. Colson encourages us to sign the Manhattan Declaration and petition, which I have done. There is another petition Cardinal Raymond Burke has endorsed at Stop the Birth Control Mandate, which I have also signed.

Check out Michael Savage’s website and you will find that our Founding Fathers anticipated the rise of a petty dictator like Obama and took precautions in the form of checks and balances.
Obama has expressed disappointment at his limited ability to get around Congress and push his agenda of “change”.
With his opposition to Obama’s dictate, Chris Matthews is showing that his is truly a liberal, as a true liberal would be as outraged as a conservative. I don’t like Matthews but I will always give credit where it is due.
Oh and folks, don’t for one minute underestimate Obama or think he is in any kind of trouble. We should be so lucky. Petty dictators don’t back down. He won’t. At best he will make you think he has. Remember what I said about the pet boa constrictor. When I look at this man I see the eyes of a reptile.
Obama seems to be trying to set himself up as God’s enemy so that if he wins reelection in 2012, he can go from “Messiah” to “King of the Universe” in the eyes of his supporters.
And his loyal proabortion subjects will bow low before another golden calf.
And I’ll say it again:
Certain bishops, Notre Dame, Doug Kmiec, Democrats for Life, and the whole lot of them who chose NOT to be wise as serpents have now made their bed. Time to sleep in it.
You were warned, pleaded with, begged, beseeched, (insert verb), it was done.
But no. Free healthcare for all, consequences be damned.
If I sound indignant, it’s because I am. What a nightmare this president has been. And what’s distressing is that so many of us saw it coming from miles away, starting with Jill Stanek.
You people need to listen to us next time.
I hope Matthews is beginning to wake up. But let me fill in some details. Last weekend some of us learned that he is scheduled to do a book-signing at a Catholic church next weekend. See http://restore-dc-catholicism.blogspot.com/2012/02/chris-matthews-at-dc-church-next.html. That post links to several clips that show Matthew’s pro-abortion stance, the latest of these being his snit over Komen’s first decision to cut funding from Planned Parenthood. We are still calling on the pastor to rescind that invitation. While it’s nice that Matthews is stewing over Obama’s tyranny, it’s a mess that he helped to create. If he continues to shill for abortion, he is not competent to address Catholics in a Church. Maybe he is indeed waking up – or, as they say, even a broken clock is correct twice a day.
Obama’s rape of the freedom of conscience….
Hi Carder and Janet
You are right that so many of us saw this coming and you as a Catholic have every reason to be outraged. I am agnostic, but a firm believer of the First Amendment. I would be no less outraged if Obama decreed that Amish communities must have electricity, and I certainly have no issue with electricity.
So many of your leaders were taken in by a sociopath. His charisma, charm, superficiality.
They overlooked his questionable dealings, support of abortion, and complete lack of qualifications. Its a story as old as the human race. As someone who has been schnookered more than once by sociopaths, I understand how this happened. As such I only wondered what took Obama so long to stick it to the very Catholics who gave him their money, support, and votes. I never had a question in my mind that he would.
When I saw the mindless adoration of millions, including Chris Matthews, I saw a red flag from the depths of hell.
Don’t get your hopes up about Chris Matthews, he will fall back into line. I think my assessment of him was too charitable. As I said Obama isn’t backing down, his personality type won’t allow it. If he has to dump this on someone else to take the flak for he will.
In the meantime, I hope some people have learned that the friendly crocodile is only eying its next meal.
Mary says:
“As I said Obama isn’t backing down, his personality type won’t allow it.”
So true. Even though there are calculated missives being sent out as damage control suggesting there is some room for a slight adjustment in the mandate—never, never, never will Obama cede gound on this issue. Advancing abortion rights and everything with it are the imposter’s number one priority.
Jack,
It’s been quite a few decades since Colson would have “run over his grandmother” for political gain. It’s called repentance. And there are few better examples of it in the world. Do you think he’s just having a barrel of laughs evangelizing in prisons?
It is for less than 30 seconds but Matthews does make sense their and I think it is the first time I have ever thought he did. I think Janet is probably right though. It could be a ploy by Matthew’s to sell more copies of his book. That makes more sense then any other explanation I have heard.
Jack,
If these pro-death people want to force Christians to pay for their contraception then they should also be ok with us legislating who they have sex with and how often. Wouldn’t you think?
An off the record meeting. Hmmmmm
Hi ts,
I don’t agree this is any kind of ploy. I think he had a momentary flash, when a lightbulb suddenly goes off. Mark my words, Matthews will fall back into line.
I am still in disbelief that a majority of Catholics voted for Obama the first time.
There’s a ton going on, but I want to focus on the main point, which is: This entire debate is not about the contraceptive mandate. It is about the First Amendment. This is about religious freedom.
THANK YOU!!!! I only wish the headline of this post reflected this fact. The headline is what is visible all over the web. You’ve buried the main point where most won’t see it.
What I don’t understand is, regardless of your beliefs, how you can think mandating an ELECTIVE medication/procedure is a good idea. What other elective medication or procedure do we mandate must be paid for by someone other than the person who wants it.
Ultimately when it comes down to one group mandating how another group should behave, then that’s not choice – nor liberty.
Abortion is as divisive as slavery, and it’s only a matter of time before there is a full civil war.
The only possibility for avoidance of a civil war is for the overwhelming might of the people to speak loudly and clearly regarding respect for life and the proper role of sexuality in our culture.
As I experienced and Planned Parenthood has amply demonstrated – belligerence is their primary weapon. If they cannot use logic because their arguments are so horribly invalid, they will resort to ad-baculum (war).
BTW – the mask that Obamacare is about health care has completely slipped – it’s simply about raw control.
Even if the administration does change course – it doesn’t change what they attempted in the first place.
I would really appreciate it if some of our proaborts who read this blog answer:
What is it about women buying their own birth control that makes everybody crazy?
Do you want the government requiring your employer to subsidize your sex life? How does this make sense?
Abortion is as divisive as slavery, and it’s only a matter of time before there is a full civil war.
Oh good grief, I hope not. The pro-life movement has only recently started building serious momentum, and it took Wilberforce nineteen years after he’d been elected to Parliament before he could even get the slave trade outlawed. Outlawing slavery entirely took even longer than that. Let’s take him as our model and be patient and persistent.
“As I said Obama isn’t backing down, his personality type won’t allow it.”
Well said Mary. Symptoms of any personality disorder, including narcissistic, include traits that are “enduring… pervasive, and clearly maladaptive.” From the APA’s DSM-IV.
i cannot stand chris mattews and thats all i can say on this topic. the little worshiper of ” the chosen one ” will indeed cave. its a show for his “catholic ” viewers. hes full a bull.
Hi Jerry and Eric,
So nice to hear from both of you.
Jerry, Obama supports nothing and no one but his own self interest and need for power. “Support” for any political conviction or ideology is based on what someone can do for him.
A perfect example is Rev.Wright, his pastor and mentor for 20 years. Whatever one may think of Rev.Wright we would agree that Obama was only too quick to toss Wright under the nearest bus when it served his political purposes. Scratch Obama’s back, he scratches yours. Its not his political “convictions” but his personality that is the real danger here. No amount of reasoning, pleading, or lawsuits will bend this man an iota.
Eric, thank you for the kind words. The most important thing as you point out is knowing the personality we are dealing with, and its a potentially very dangerous one. Little by little this man will erode our freedoms, while his left wing minions blindly cheer.
mary well put. and the entire thought of obama and what he is doing sends a tingle down my leg…..but in a creepy way. btw did matthews really say that? lol please someone tell me he was joking if he did.
Heather, unfortunately he did talk about a tingle in his leg in March 2008. He was apparently quite serious when he said,
“I have to tell you, you know, it’s part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama’s speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don’t have that too often.” http://chrismatthewsleg.wordpress.com/about/
oh eric thanks for the laugh. i should have known now i must ROFLMAO!
