Stanek wkend Q: What should Wendy Davis’s follow-up to her paraplegic ad be?
Yesterday the Wendy Davis campaign released a new ad attacking her Texas gubernatorial opponent Greg Abbott, who is a paraplegic.
The shockingly tasteless ad was immediately condemned not only by Republicans but by… everyone.
The Washington Post called the ad “one of the nastiest campaign ads you will ever see.” WashPo reporter Chris Cillizza tweeted:
https://twitter.com/TheFix/status/520661719111462912
CNN deemed the ad a ”Hail Mary” by Davis, who is being trounced by Abbot in the polls 54% to 40%.
The Mother Jones headline: “If Wendy Davis thinks she can win an election by pointing out her opponent’s disability, she’s wrong.”
Dave Catanese of U.S. News & World Report tweeted, “Wendy Davis has gone off the rails.”
The Buzz Feed headline: “Wendy Davis ad subtly points out opponent is in a wheelchair with big photo of wheelchair.”
Texas Observer’s Christopher Hooks tweeted: ““Holy sh– guys. Think of the number of people this had to get past in the planning process.”
Kasie Hunt from NBC News tweeted:“The new Wendy Davis ad… just, Wow.”
The Fusion’s Jordan Fabian wrote: “Trailing by double digits in the polls, the Democrat has apparently decided to go down swinging. And she’s doing it in the ugliest way possible.”
I could go on and on… and on. Read more at defeatdavis.com.
Then the tweet hashtag got started, #NextWendyDavisAd. A sampling of the groaners…

I suggested that a new moniker for Davis to replace Abortion Barbie might be Paraplegic Skipper. Get it? Oy.
You get the idea. So what suggestions do you have for Wendy Davis’s next campaign ad?

The ad is appalling, yes. But it’s not surprising that someone who advocates for killing unborn babies with disabilities also has no respect for born people with disabilities.
I’m liking the kitten ad, myself.

Since she’s such a big proponent of late-term abortion, I think her next ad should show one.

Wendy Davis may have some really bad judgment at times, JDC, but I don’t think you can really support that one. ;)

I learned from watching television that LGBTQ people make up something like 40% of the population — so that’s a pretty important voting bloc for Wendy to get. I think she should put all of her effort into getting the LGBTQ voters on her side.
(Since Texas women and Texas men appear to favor Abbott by large majorities.)
The sad thing is that even in Texas, it looks like 40% of voters would vote for Hitler — if he ran as a Democrat.

Why are we talking about Sarah Palin in this thread?
Mrs. Palin is a smart lady and an inspiring speaker. She has real executive experience (she was governor of Alaska; does everyone forget this?) It is no surprise that liberals fear and hate and spew so much bile about her.
You know what? It hasn’t hindered Mrs. Palin’s career and influence one bit.
Wendy has just one moment on her resume — She’s the pink running shoes who demanded late-term abortions to continue in a state that doesn’t want that barbarous practice anymore.
The one thing I cannot fathom is why the Democratic leadership consented to run her for governor. There weren’t any viable Democrats capable and interested in the job?

Sigh. So much ignorance and narcissism on these message boards. You’re not even arguing about the ad. You’re arguing about Democrats vs Republicans in general to indirectly promote yourself. Half of you (or more) probably don’t know what it means to be of either of those parties historically. The original progressives were heavily Republican and the early social conservatives were heavily Democratic. It isn’t a “Democrat thing” to get an abortion or a “Republican thing” to forbid it. It doesn’t matter which one of these people you’re hiding behind, but you’re bigoted and uninformed either way. Black and white thinking isn’t a sign of good health. The truth is that we don’t know why the ad was made, or what the exact intention was, and we don’t really know how either of these people feel personally about certain issues, because for objective people who see the big picture (unlike yourselves), personal policies don’t always work as political policies. I think it was a poor choice of Wendy’s, however, regardless of intent because surely she could’ve guessed how it would be taken.

Could you be a little more vague; I’m having trouble talking down my conscience this morning and could use a little more “mushy middle thinking” to get me started today. smh
Here’s what happens: The Hegelian Dialectic is used to get people to find the “middle way between good and evil.” When people accept *that* mushy middle, the Dialecticians find another middle, and so on down the line. You have to stand for moral principles in life or you will be taken for a merry ride down the primrose path. Thanks for playing the game. Not.

Actually, Shelby, I do know the history of both parties and I am neither Democrat nor Republican. I don’t oppose Wendy because she is a Democrat. I oppose her because she has openly advocated for the killing of unborn babies.
And regardless of her “intent”, she had to know the ad was in poor taste. It’s evident to pretty much everyone. So there’s no excuse for that.

I suspect that Shelby is accustomed to thinking in terms of “liberal v conservative” or “Democrat v Republican,” and so he/she imagines that most people think like that.
The basic issue with the ad is that the Davis campaign showed poor judgment in running that ad…. even the Davis supporters (huffpo, et al.) are embarrassed by it.
I maintain that the Texas Democratic party bosses showed poor judgment in running Davis at all. This is not to say that Republicans haven’t shown poor judgment in the past.
for the most part, this board does not expect that our salvation will come from the politics of any party. But we do oppose pro-abortion politicians and celebrities, at every opportunity.

Actually, I was addressing many of the people who wrote replies before my post, if you look at the top. For some people, it’s become an argument about Democrats and Republicans in general, and even Sarah Palin’s intelligence. Then this whole issue becomes an excuse for people to promote their parties than to seek justice and respect for people with disabilities. Wendy didn’t make that ad because she’s a liberal. She made it because she decided to make a bold move, which unfortunately involved being tactless and insensitive. I disagree with the ad but I fail to see what it has to do with her party. Most ads are misleading in the least, even if they aren’t always this offensive, but the point is that politicians of all sorts tend not to be above playing dirty, especially when they’re desperate. But some of the people here play just as dirty, and appear to have been almost waiting for something like this to occur, so they could promptly pair it with her being pro-choice and form a correlation between pro-choice people in general and people who make fun of the disabled. That is disgusting in itself.
Although I was not addressing those of you who replied after me (How could I?, your own defensiveness implies you need a defense.

Um, no, Shelby.
Those of us who abhor Wendy Davis abhor her because: of all the things in the world she could’ve used her talent and position for, she spent on fighting for the right for women to kill their babies in the Third trimester. THAT’S her line in the sand. That’s her legacy. Well, that and her own two dead babies.
Her commercial merely cements what we knew all along.
A dead baby doesn’t care what political party you belong to, just as long as you raise your voice against her guaranteed right to be slaughtered. But know this: the Democratic Party views the right to abortion as one of the foundations of their agenda. Many of us here cannot stomach any of the good that might be in their agenda as well. Conversely, I will leave the Republican Party the moment they cut a Prolife stance out of its platform.

You have a valid point. Any politician or local party machine could fail to understand the people they hope to serve and make such a blunder as this. We are holding the Democratic Party machine in Texas responsible for allowing this ad. If a pro-abortion Republican had done this against a pro-life Democrat, we would behave the same.
This blog is a diverse group, and some posters are partisans for their favorite party. But mostly we are pro-life and politically independent. We support any candidate who is pro-life. We long for the day when candidates from all Parties are pro-life — just as all party candidates support racial equality and oppose slavery (even as they disagree whether affirmative action is worthwhile).
We would love for all party candidates to support women and children in need, and realize that abortion does not help women or children.
Our problem is that the Democratic Party has a plank that endorses abortion. They are in bed with the abortion industry, and support them with huge taxpayer subsidies. Until they fix that, their Party will be hard for us to endure.

They say that towards the end of the old USSR, people made jokes about literally everything, because everything had become pretty much completely absurd under Socialism.
I think humor is one of the best things God has given to humankind, and humor can be used for good as well as evil, like pretty much anything else in life. Humor “gets under the radar” of most people. People who stand behind lies can’t stand very much humor about those lies, or the lying liars who lie the lies, I’ve noticed. But they don’t have a problem with telling lies about truth and even joking about it.
With humorless, defensive hard-heads standing by to call “racist, hater, homophobe and extremist” at anyone who stands on moral principle, and then calls on their evil jokesters to humiliate the opposition with MORE LIES, then it gets to be a matter of telling clean jokes about the liars or you’d lose a sense of humanity for both the lies and the liars and the truth and the truth-tellers of things.
Wendy Davis and her handlers must be pretty humorless to put out that ad. If they couldn’t see that what they were putting out was evil, then maybe a little clean humor will get under their radar and give them a clue.

Dear Christian prolifers: I pray that you understand we are in a tremendous spiritual battle for the hearts, lives, legacy and future generations of this nation. Please pray and even fast if you can over the next weeks for this upcoming election on November 4th. The attacks are getting worse and worse because the enemies of godliness and morality are desperate, the anger that is being displayed is only the tip of the iceberg of the rage of satan and those who hate life and Biblical standards. Remember “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds”. Please be careful as you take a stand for life, those of you who pray at 40 Days for Life, those who counsel at abortuaries, and even those who work at pregnancy care centers. Please pray that the slaughter of innocent, unborn babies created in God’s image will end, understand that abortion is blasphemy against God because men, women and precious babies are created and designed in God’s image which satan absolutely hates. Please pray for Jill and all the other prolife warriors that are on the frontline. Please pray for the prolife candidates all over this nation. In Illinois we have had pro-aborts in power for so long many may think it is a lost cause to pray and to vote but please pray that millions of pro-lifers will turn out at the polls or early vote or vote by mail. Please get a voter’s guide from prolife organizations in your state so you will know who stands for life. God is able to shock this nation with a turn around in the government. No, the government is not our answer so we don’t put our faith in government but God instructed his people in “2 Chron. 7:14 “If my people who are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray, seek my face, turn from their wicked ways then will I hear from heaven and heal their land.” We hate no man or woman but we are hated for standing for life and for righteousness. PLEASE PRAY PROLIFERS FOR OUR NATION!!! God bless you.

Great post, Prolifer L
The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, jr. said something that gives me encouragement to stay the course and stand for life. He said, “Lies can’t stand forever.”
Christianity is a resurrection faith. Christians believe lies can’t stand forever, and that Truth, which is not a something but a Somebody, shall rise again.
God’s plans never change, they never collapse, and with God, all things are possible. “Jesus Christ; the same yesterday, today and forever.” ~Hebrews 13:8~

I’ve had this quote taped to the inside of my cupboard door for many years now. I’m reminded about our obligation to fight for the lives of the little ones among us every time I read it:
“A time comes when silence is betrayal…”
– Martin Luther King, Jr. quoting from a statement of Clergy and Laymen Concerned about Vietnam, April 4, 1967
We cannot betray the little ones with our silence. Please pray for my youngest son who will be Confirmed this week. He knows the story of how I was pressured to abort him as well as his brother. The War is very real and outspoken prolife young people are targets as well.

Thank you Doc Kimble and Praxedes for your kind comments. We must stay on our knees but also vote with our feet to stand for candidates who stand for life and morality. I will pray for your youngest son Prax and his Confirmation. The War is indeed very real.

Because the McCain campaign was in dire trouble, and a “Hail Mary” type thing was attempted – picking Palin.
