Using Obama’s lie pledge to the Pope
Pro-lifers should keep Obama’s pledge to the Pope handy at all times.
Heretofore Obama and his people have been careful to say they want to reduce the “need” for abortion, not the “number.” Big difference.
But about Obama’s meeting last week with the Pope, Catholic News Service reported:
“The president explicitly expressed his commitment to reducing the numbers of abortions….” [Vatican spokesman Fr. Federico Lombardi] said.
“Need” is not quantifiable, “number” is. In fact, Obama’s commitment to the Pope directly contradicts a statement in May by Melody Barnes, his White House Director of Domestic Policy Council:
“It is not our goal to reduce the number of abortions.”…. The goal, she insisted, is to “reduce the need for abortions.”
Well, reducing the number is now your goal, Melody. And pro-lifers should jump on that statement. House Minority Whip Eric Cantor did, writing today…
If he is serious about reducing the number of abortions in our country, President Obama should not force taxpayers and private insurance companies to fund them. Abortion groups themselves have made clear that more funding leads to more abortions. I hope that his statement to the pope is evidence that President Obama is willing to join Republicans and Democrats who have expressed their firm commitment to exclude abortion from any health-care plan that moves forward.
I agree with Deal Hudson:
I think the president made one mistake in his meeting with the pope: Obama, once again, brought up his promise of abortion reduction. This puts him on the public record with the Holy Father, something that may come back to haunt him later on.
No one really believes the nonsense about abortion reduction, certainly not prelates like Cardinal Regali who has already pointed out how it contradicts Obama’s plan to provide federal funding for abortions in Washington D.C.
It has already been pointed out that Obama’s real promise is to reduce the “need” for abortion by reducing poverty among mothers who seek abortion for economic reasons.
Thus, the Obama’s administration does not have to target abortion per se, but only pursue his anti-poverty programs.
But now it does. Obama is on record with the Pope. And I have a feeling his pro-abortion supporters are furious.

I think many people that supported Obama are having buyer’s remorse. His approval ratings continue to drop.
However, I do think pro aborts can rest assured they have a big supporter in the White House. Not just the president but the first lady. Didnt Michelle Obama call partial birth abortion a “necessary medical procedure”?
The good news is I really believe the pro life movement is winning. Maybe not in banning abortions entirely, but I think most Americans do not agree with abortion on demand with no restrictions whatsoever.
And I also believe candidates that are fiscal and social conservatives are going to be winning big in 2010.
There is going to be a huge mess to clean up.
IF we even HAVE elections in 2010, Joanne….I hope you’re right!
Obama “explicitly expressed his commitment to reducing the numbers of abortions…”?
Yeah, and Hitler signed a treaty promising not to invade Poland, and Russia…
The good news is I really believe the pro life movement is winning. Maybe not in banning abortions entirely, but I think most Americans do not agree with abortion on demand with no restrictions whatsoever.
Joanne,
But the movement is winning in the idea of banning abortions entirely, too. Recent Gallup polls attest to the fact that prolifers are gaining speed. I believe in this respect, the internet has been our friend. Naral, NOW, Planned Parenthood, none of them can keep the truth about abortion off the worldwide web. We’re able to get photos, facts about the “procedures”, facts about the unborn baby, and our voices in general to mainstream America in a much more effective way online than we were able to before the internet became commonplace.
On a related note, how about the Pope handing Obama Dignitas Persona? :)
His pro-abortion supporters are not going to be furious. They know just as we do that he is lying.
There is just no area where he will work to actually reduce abortion as I detailed here:

Don’t under estimate President Obama…like Jesus, he was a community organizer…Pilate was a governor.
Simona,
Yes, but Jesus didn’t encourage the slaughter of millions of babies.
Simona, I’ve heard that sound bite tossed around quite a bit. Cute, but not accurate.
Jesus wasn’t a community organizer. If anything the Jews wanted him to organize their community against the oppressive government, and he didn’t do that.
Jesus organize and teach the Jews that became Christians against the oppressive Sadducees, etc. What can be more oppressive than sin?
The Obama magical mystery tour continues, this time with a stop at the Eternal City. He says what he thinks will placate whomever he is addressing, in this instance it was the Pope.
This time we have something to measure (the actual number of abortions) but if his math on this works the same way he says the so-called stimulus package is “working” who can believe his assessment on anything? It reminds us of his nebulous “create or SAVE xxx number of jobs.” Who can ever measure the number of jobs saved?
With the number of genuinely good Christians offering prayers for our president, there is of course always the chance he could adopt some real Judeo-Christian values–starting with a realization that innocent human life in the womb is sacred and should be protected by law. And then, after a reading of Dignitas Persona, perhaps he will come to understand the importance of the principle of subsidiarity and how it relates in a very real and moral sense to the ongoing discussion of the proper role of government.
But we have been down this road so many times with CINO Catholics Pelosi, Kennedy, Leahy, Biden, and many others, that it seems unlikely he will change. It is becoming clearer by the day that in 2010 most of our ruling political class should be ousted.
He says what he thinks will placate whomever he is addressing, in this instance it was the Pope.

Jerry,
Fortunately for us, Obama is greatly mistaken if he believes he can placate the Pope.
That’s the beauty of Truth. You can’t just silence it with pretty words.
Simona, go read your Bible again. There were no Christians during Christ’s time on earth, just followers of Jesus. And He did not teach against the “evil Sadducees”, He taught against hypocrisy and other such issues (and was far harder on the Pharisees on that particular topic)…
Hard to argue a point if you don’t have the basic facts down. Judas WANTED Jesus to be a community organizer, that’s the whole reason he betrayed Him for 30 coins of silver… he was trying to force His hand into displaying His glory as the Son of God. Jesus, however, was NOT a community organizer, He was a Saviour.
Simona,
Really, what you’re failing to see is that in no way is Obama like Jesus. For one, Jesus never was one to seek out political clout. For another, Jesus DIDN’T SUPPORT MASS GENOCIDE.
I am so sick and tired of the references to Obama being like God or like the Savior. He’s a politician, people. A politician who has sold out to NARAL, NOW, and PP. To abortion.
Part of the abortion movement strategy is to twist, tell half truths, deceive, and then bold face lie about everything else.
At least Obama is consistent.
So once he reduces the “need” for abortions, and all abortions are not because of the “need” for an abortion, would it be okay to make it illegal then?
Mary Rose: You are right, of course. I should have said Obama “attempted” to placate the Pope. Nevertheless, he probably thinks he did. But Benedict is no fool. I am still so proud of him not allowing himself to be used as a political prop for Pelosi.
Jerry,
Agreed. Pope Benedict has been an amazing source of inspiration for those of us who struggle for the right words or actions. There are many in our system of government who would manipulate him to further their cause, but Benedict has yet to back down an inch.
I know Obama expected their meeting to be a raving success for him, and I’m so pleased that the Pope has managed to retain the focus on life, clear and unbridled.
Obama is a liar.
And the pope knows that.
